If I take it again, will I look like a prick?

As a junior I took the SATs for the first time on Nov. 4, having scored very well on the few practice tests I took. Scores should be in tomorrow, and I'm wondering what I'd do in a particular situation - if, for example, I score something like a 2320.

It's a terrific score, but I know from having taken the practice tests that I can probably score substantially higher; I more or less aced two of the tests available from the college board online SAT course thing, and scored in the upper end of the 2300's on the other two.

In that situation, would I come off as a jerk to admissions folks for taking it again? Would it even be worth it? Any insights would be appreciated.

(This is all hypothetical though, maybe I'll be perfectly happy with tomorrow's results- or perhaps dissatisfied enough that it's an easy decision to re-take.)

I wouldn't think so. I know a lot of people don't like that, but I don't see why it would be bad to aim higher. Taking it a second time should indeed indicate an improvement.

Many admissions officers have said they see no difference between a 750 and an 800...so if you had 780/770/770, it might look like you're a perfectionist/extreme overachiever, and in that case it could actually be negative. If however, you scored something like 800/800/720 (or anything below 750, really), and you know you could score better, then by all means retake it.

Why don't you just wait to see what you actually score before going through all the possible scenarios? Surely there's something more fun to do than that!!

There wouldn't be much of a difference in their eyes between a 2320 and a 2380, but I might retake once if I were just because you could do better.

if u get a 2320 dont waste the money to take it again... 41 dollars when ur already in upper 30% for damn near EVERY college... y would u bother

Someone already pointed this out, but there's a big difference between 770/770/780 and 800/800/720, so consider retaking the test accordingly. I personally got something like the former, and although I could probably still boost the score up a few notches, retaking it just isn't worth it seeing as I am 99th percentile in all three categories already.

Also, for all you know, you could have gotten the 2400 already, so definitely wait to register. If you're a junior, give it a few months; I know I personally grew a whole lot during junior year and nailed the SAT this October as a senior where as I probably would have gotten something in the mid-2100s had I taken it where you are now.

Ultimately, take it again if the extra 80 points (or whatever) make a difference to you. Keep in mind that you could use the four hours you'd spend taking the test on something much more valuable like sleep, though :D.

Thanks for the advice. By the way, if I were to retake the SATs I'd probably wait until the beginning of senior year to do so.

Good idea. A few of my friends who are admittedly smarter than I am dropped $1000+ on prep, took it in April, and scored lower than I did simply because they took it too early. I just did a couple of the Blue Book tests and got plenty of sleep, and that worked out fine :).

I'm retaking an 800/700/800, poo on whoever thinks I look like a jerk.

That's completely acceptable assuming you think you can pull up whatever the 700 is in. Assuming it's in reading (as you indicated in another post), I'd actually encourage it; CR seems to be the most important section as far as college admissions goes.

That doesn't look well for me then...I got 800, 800, 700 (CR)...I'm applying business though, so hopefully it's not really a big deal

go for it- retake it if you think you can get a perfect score. but if you doubt you can, I wouldn't. But it seems as if you can pull of a perfect score, so go for it!!

Oh yeah, it's CR :P I hate reading, I hate CR, I hate it all. I'm going to be a biomedical engineer as my major, then go on to Med School. I think a 600-650+ CR is just fine for a science/engineering major, but no, to get into the Ivies/ MIT/ Stanford/ Hopkins/ Duke, you need at least a 720 CR. Lol :P

Well, got the scores:
800 CR
710 Math
800 Writing

In that case, it seems fine to re-take, right?

Also, if I were to ace the math section the next time I took it, with slightly lower scores on CR and writing, would that actually be looked at by colleges as a "combined score" of 2400?

Thanks for everyone's help.

Yes, if you believe you will score much higher, you can take it again. Yes, it will be looked at as a 2400 by most colleges.

Would it make sense to retake with this score (from November SAT)?

CR: 800
Math: 770
Writing: 800 (80 MC 11 essay)

I don't think I will, but I know I could get an 800 in math...This was my first time taking the SAT, I'm a junior, and I want to apply to competitive schools.
Help? :)

Cuddley Sheep, if you retake that, I will personally shoot you in the head. And just take the scores until you in the college's range. If you already are, then don't worry about it and focus on other things.

A 2370 is an extremely high score. You can retake if you really want to score 2400, but getting a 2400 vs. 2370 won't affect your college admission decisions at all. Honestly, the only benefits I can see are bragging rights. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

if I get a 8/8/7 (math) and I am considering majoring in engineering or business, should I retake?
