I am interested in cars and as so im thinking of becoming an automotive engineer. What major would that fall under? adn can someone give me any other advice?

Mechanical Engineering. You will likely not be alone as many MEs dream of being in the automotive industry.

so its not really an in demand field?

when i was contemplating about choosing a major, my dad had a very strong opinion against being a mech e major. he says its really tough for mech e's to find a job (tough as in, finding a job that relates to their field of study), so im assuming finding a job in the automotive industry would be a lot tougher as a mech e major.

Do you want to do design work or engineering? If you are interested in design, consider an Industrial Design program. Carnegie Mellon and RISD are two good schools that offer ID.

could u explain the difference?

to really dumb it down, ID is like drawing. if ur an artsy creative type person., u draw the concept cars or whatever on paper or design it on computer. but its not really anything like mechanical engineering. which i feel is more of what u want to do.

I recently graduated from Michigan State - Mechanical Eng. Most of the class took jobs in the auto industry.

I don't know where you guys are but everywhere I've been (Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and now Arkansas) there are TONS of jobs available for MEs. It is definately in demand! It is the #1 major of engineers looking to get into the automotive industry. It is the best major to get into places like Ford and GM...they hire many MEs!

very true..

Now that i think about it, it seems like auto engineers are restricted to certain areas.

take a look at Clemson - they are big into things automotive

I think designing cars is related to Arts than ME

There was a program on Discovery I think called "Birth of a Sports Car" which profiled the development on a new BMW model. Quite interesting show taking through from design to production.

I think Industrial Design is the equivalent to Architecture and Automotive Engineering is equivalent to Civil or Structural Engineering for buildings.
