If I want to go into the financial/business world, would statistics or calc be more u

seful?

As a freshmen, I am trying to figure out which courses I want to take 1st semester. As far as the math courses go, I am looking at the following courses:

Math 171 - Statistical Theory and Application in the real world
Math 221 - Linear Algebra
Math 222 - Multivariable Calculus

*I have AP credit so I can take the 221 or 222 level classes.

So can some older student tell me which one is more practical and which courses are more difficult?

Thanks.

Math 221-222 would be more difficult. Math 171 is a joke although Math 221 is pretty easy also. As for which is more practical, perhaps someone else can answer.

When you say Math 171 is a joke, do you mean that it is really easy, even for people who are slightly above average at math? Or do you mean the course teaches you nothing useful? Or do you mean both? lol.

Math 221 - Linear algebra - In your opinion, would that be good for someone who just graduated high school, after taking two years of AP calc (AB and BC). (I got a 4 on the calc BC test but a 5 on the AB test.)

Thanks again.

Stats is always useful, no matter what field you plan on going into. I meant that Math 171 is really easy.

Math 221 is designed for freshman math majors so most of the students in the class will be freshmen such as yourself. There is very little calc. in the course as it deals with algebra not calculus so your performance in AP calc is probably irrelevant.

Splinter -- You are in ILR so 171 would be duplicative.

Take 221. For anybody who want to do econometrics and quantitative modeling, it is almost a requisite. It's not really the course designed for math majors either... 223 is.

I took 221 coming out of calculus in high school. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't the hardest course either.
