If I was previously waitlisted/Pass-Fail grades

2 questions:

1) Are chances of being accepted as a transfer student more or less likely if I was waitlisted the first time I applied to the school?

2) I am taking Calculus this semester (I'm a first semester freshman), and because math is not my strength and it is a difficult class, am taking it pass/fail. I am going to pass, but would that fact that I did it pass/fail be devastating for transfer admission?

Thanks!

1) It will not harm your chances. I would say that having been WL at least confirms that you are an applicant who meets the standards the school is looking for (ie, they would have rejected you if you didn’t have adequate stats, etc. for the school). But it won’t necessarily increase your chances. Each year, many students who “try again” at a given school still fail to get accepted. Some do get accepted even if rejected previously.

Hard to answer any further (and it would only be speculation, anyway) without knowing how selective a school we are talking about. In any case, do all you can to improve your application (improved essays, etc.).

2) No, it will not be devastating assuming you are not planning to major in a field which requires it (science, econ…).

When a student is accepted for transfer, it is possible that the new school will not give credit for P/F courses taken at a previous school. Some do. Some don’t. Some give credit if you can document (via prof or registrar) that the letter grade would have been at least a C.
