just wondering: I'm female and I'm currently a junior. So far I've gotten some awards in math, more than any other areas anyway, such as a 146.5/150 on the AMC10 last year. A friend told me that if I am to apply with Math as an intended major, I will have a better shot. (I would like to major in engineering, biomed probably, pure math is too theoretical for my liking.) Would you say this is valid? Thanks for any response =)

If I'm an adcom, I'm thinking that a 150 will really strengthen the math department so that it truly does yield the best in all the land, so maybe that does help you. However, if you apply for engineering, you will probably stand out more because such high math scores are probably more common in math applicants, and they might think your math background will give u an advantage. If you keep up the good work and qualify for USAMO or something, i'm sure you'll have no problem getting in no matter the major. And being a female doesn't hurt.

Students are not admitted to any one department at MIT...if it were easier to get into one department than any other everybody would just apply to that department. The AdCom fully anticipates that some students will change their intended major by sophomore year, so it wouldn't be smart for them to base any part of admissions on this. MIT is one of few elite schools without a true "backdoor".

awesome. that makes me feel better actually =]
