If i will not qualify for any need-based aid, should i still fill out the fafsa?

My father's income and assets put me out of the running for any need-based aid. But alot of schools say a student must submit one by a certain date. I also understand that merit aid can only be obtained through the fafsa. How much of this is true?

Depends on school.
As schools want to maximize the amount of money they have to award for merit- they want to insure that students who have need- receive need based monies as well.
If your parents are OK with applying for aid- I would go ahead & do so. You may be pleasantly surprised & some schools are more difficult to get need based aid from in later years if your circumstances change.
You also need to apply for FAFSA to receive Stafford loans.

Maybe yes, maybe no. You need to check EACH school. Some schools do require the completion of their financial aid application materials (FAFSA, Profile or anything else they require for financial aid consideration) for awarding of merit aid. Others do not. Gotta check, as YMMV by school.

In addition, some schools will NOT allow you to APPLY for institutional aid in subsequent years if you don’t apply as an incoming freshman. Check for that too.

And lastly, by completing the FAFSA YOU (the student) would be able to take out a Stafford loan in your name if you chose to do so.

Thanks guys, this helped!
