If I'm a computer science major, what should I minor in?

Hi. I was just wondering...I'm going to be a freshman in college and I've decided that my major will be computer science. I am also interested in minoring in a different concentration, but I don't know what to minor in. Can I get some ideas, please? Thanks in advance.

Whatever you may be interested in.

Or whatever you may be interested in applying computer science to. This could anything from engineering/science/math/statistics (scientific computing), to economics/finance (computerized trading systems and the like), to various types of social studies (social networking might be an area of research here), to humanities (an example would be a recent research finding about the trends in word use in the written English works over time, as well as automatic translation between human languages).

mandarin no doubt

Anything. It’s hard for us to recommend minors without knowing much about you, but your minor doesn’t have to relate to your major at all.

I would recommend a foreign language for anybody.

I’m minoring in music, since it’s different and something I enjoy. When you have a tough major, it’s nice to take enjoyable classes to stay sane.

Consider minoring in Math. Many CS programs let you get through without taking a full complement of very important CS-related math classes. Don’t let that happen to you!

The right mathematical background adds lots of depth to the CS degree. That’s the knowledge that will set you apart.

And you’ll still have room for another minor, in a field of your interest. Usually CS and Math go so well together that you still have flexibility.

At my school, cognitive science was a semi-popular minor for CS majors, but not every school offers a cognitive science degree.

Business could be a smart decision. This way you could get some general business courses in and have a computer science background at the same time. Saint leo university in Florida is one school that I know of that offers a computer science degree through their business school.
