If I'm international, can I pay in-state next year?

If I'm going in as an international, but my status changes while I'm there, can I apply for in-state privileges?

I always thought it was difficult to be considered in-state if you are an OOS/international student since your parents would normally be supporting you. It requires your parents to move to VA and establish residence here plus you have to wait a certain time period before in-state privileges are given.

You have to fulfill the requirements found here.

The simple answer is: no

hazelorb - I don’t think it’s as simple as a no.

My mom is projected to obtain her R-1 Visa (is this type of visa eligible for in-state?) but my Dad is not. Would I still be able to apply even though only one of my parents has obtained in-state status if I somehow show that my Dad will be coming to VA as soon as he gets his visa??

You have to show that you+family live in the state for reasons other than attending UVA. This is very hard to prove. Unless you+family move here and work for a year, change all of your taxes, etc, then it will not happen.

Also, you may “start the process” 12 months after you move, it doesnt mean you will automatically get it on the first day of your 13th month. IE if you move there in August, the following August you may apply for an in-state status. I dont believe that they would grant it to you if you are not a permanent resident with your mothers R1 visa, but even if they would, you would still have to pay the second year’s tuition with the OOS rates.
