Also community college/transfer to 4 year.
Really investigate the WUE schools and talk to your parents now about $. Run the price calculator for some of those and Occidental.

@Southoftheriver someone previously turned me on to WUE. I got LOTS of CSUs (which from what you’ve said seem bad geography fit for me), my top school (based on # of desired majors) was UNM.
Is Sacramento WUE? I would keep that and San Francisco on the list is those are options. I love New Mexico but have not visited that campus.
CSUSac and UNM are in the WUE list.
SFSU is not in the WUE list.
Just revisited WUE. HI-Manoa and Portland St were promising (from memory, did better below)
Checked UNM’s page at collegesimply.com, and they had 8 majors that piqued interest and had a diversity score of Very High.
Yay! Also thinking Mills College in Oakland.
What’s your GPA this year only? If you are looking for merit your GPA will be a significant factor.
As we sit here now: 3.35 (unweighted)
You’ve gotten some good info - next step is to dive into their websites. Looking forward to a status update!
Anyone familiar with the WUE schools I mentioned?
I rechecked WUE. My top 4 (by # of majors)
UNM
WA ST
Manoa/Portland St.
“(I understand that last point is vague)” Vague is fine at this point. The coursework to come, the people you will meet and interact with, the research interests of faculty – all of that will meld together over time in helping you to determine what to do going forward. Pro Tip: Work hard. Enjoy the many distractions, but don’t get too… distracted : )
Random thoughts of dubious utility: SLO – Definitely insular; LBSU (near me) – A more interesting surrounding environment than CS-LA or Northridge. Public busses to beaches and downtown (LB) for example. Airport a few miles away for MO trips; Give a look to CSU Chico? Also insular (cities are far apart in the Central Valley) but a decent-sized non-fancy town and a nice campus in CA terms. I know two recent grads who liked it.
The Cal states are not an option for OP with a budget of $15K/year since they offer no need based financial aid other than Federal aid if eligible or barely any merit aid which needs a high GPA. OP would be looking at around $40K/year for just tuition/room/board not including transportation and book costs. Even with WUE, costs still be be around $25K/year ir more. No Cal states offer 4 years of on-campus housing since that was a requirement for OP.
@barbthewarrior; Run some net price calculators on some target schools, show your parents the results and then see where you stand. You have time to find affordable options before you apply.
Does ECU stand for East Carolina University or a different school?
@EconPop yup, East Carolina University
@Gumbymom Based on people here saying CSs were largely commuter, and me being out-of-state (MT), I had moved them off my list.
For #4, you need to have high stats, close to 4.0 gpa and high test scores (my kids who chose OOS could only go if they got large merit awards bring the costs down to close to $30,000) OOS public tuition is usually around $45,000 - $50,000 a year. In state is usually the cheapest option, but room/board a year can be $15,000, so obviously commuting can help.
In case folks haven’t already, DEFINITELY check out my other threads. They will flesh out what I’m all about.
Talking to my dad, he told me they set up a 529 when I was born and have been maxing it out annually since. Should have good chunk of change in it.
You really want to know the actual numbers of the price limit. A “good chunk of change” can mean different things to different people.
