If it's okay, I'd like people's thoughts on my VERY preliminary list

Thanks @Gumbymom. I’ll report later my other findings.

I think ASU would be a good fit in terms of what you are looking for, but not sure about the budget piece based on your current GPA. They have a scholarship estimator tool on their website you can use to get an idea. There’s a show on Amazon prime called The College Tour that has an episode on ASU.

Also, some colleges consider “core GPA” vs overall GPA for scholarships, so you will need to verify the exact parameters for the colleges on your list. Is GPA in core subjects close to your overall?

Put together my criteria and ranked my schools. Here’s how it ranked:

LBSU
UNM
UNLV
TEMPLE
ASU
ZONA
MANOA
MARYLAND
PORTLAND ST
OREGON

BTW: my criteria were:

High Enrollment
High Minority Percentage
Low Tuition

It might change in 2 years but its a great start.

@2plustrio any thoughts on those schools?

Forgot KEY factor: admission rate! Adding that changed my order a bit:

UNM
ASU
LBSU
UNLV
ZONA
TEMPLE
PORTLAND ST
MANOA
MARYLAND
OREGON

I COULD add majors, but that just feeds OCD/neurosis

BTW: High acceptance was better

What are your majors?

@CollegeBoundBrit I’m looking at various Area Studies and Foreign Language

I don’t know any of those schools personally. I am starting to get a rough draft of a list for my own sophomore but not finalizing anything because much can change in 2 years.
You have a solid list of 10 colleges. Get through your sophomore year and your junior year and then revisit the list. See if anything has changed as far as grades or potential majors. Your family’s financials could change as well which is a HUGE factor.
I caution any high school student to fall in love with only 1 school, especially as a sophomore.

@2plustrio EXCELLENT advice which I TRULY take to heart! Hopefully I can stay on track, maybe even bump up in levels in certain areas.

Admission rates are a good starting point, but depending upon the college, some will admit directly into the major which can be more competitive (lower admission rate) vs. the overall campus so also look at how you are admitted as a Freshman applicant. CSULB admits by major.

Couldn’t help myself! Wasn’t as aggressive with majors as I should have, and it got weird how to add new info to ranks. Anyway, with majors added:

ASU
UNM
ZONA
TEMPLE
MARYLAND
UNLV
LBSU
MANOA
OREGON
PORTLAND ST

Have you run the net price calculators? Many out of state publics may not be affordable if your budget is $25K.

@Mwfan1921 not yet. :frowning: are the calculators on school sites or sites like this?

Each college should have a net price calculator on its web site.

Use the Net Price Calculator on each schools website but also check the date on the NPC since some have not been updated in several years. Right now all will be a rough estimate since you will want to use the most current NPC before you apply.

Compared UNM and ASU, realized UNM is WAY smaller! Both than ASU AND what I thought.

If you saw that someone was applying to my top 10 schools, what would you conclude about the student?

That they were wisely broadening their options.
