When my parents had me they weren't married. And they never got married. My dad's married to my stepmom and my mom's still single. So what should I put as my parents' marital status? I'm using my mom's information since she is my custodial parent. So should I put single or separated/divorced even though, legally speaking, they are not?

I had a student in your exact situation; she put single for both parents…if the schools have a question, they will inquire

The mother is definitely single at this point in time. However the father is married at this point in time. So should OP not put married for father. For FAFSA it may not matter much as it the NCP does not count, but for CSS it would matter.

For the FAFSA, you will use your mom’s information (she is single because she has never been married).

For schools that use the CSS profile and non custodial profile, you will need the information and assets of your mom, your dad and your stepmom.
