If my school does not offer AP classes, what's next?

I am an upcoming Junior.

Is there any other way for me to get AP credit?

OR is there anything I REALLY need to do that Duke will favor?

don’t worry _ Duke will know. Take the most challenging classes you can. If you can you can self study and take the exam but they won’t see your grade till long after they decided for or against you. Take courses at local college… stuff like that

Thanks for the advice!

I agree. Duke will know what the situation is at your school and look to see that you’ve made the best of your situation.

I agree with taking local community college courses, or see if there’s another school in the area you could take, say, Calculus AB or BC at. See if you can maybe take an online class (Duke doesn’t give credit to its students for online courses, but I think in your situation it would show real initiative).

Self-studying, I think, is always a little bit of an interesting situation, bc it’s hard to really prove, and prove the dedication someone has to it. I’d pick and choose carefully too, because self-studying Calculus or Physics is probably just going to be a miserable task, but Environmental Science may prove to be OK. Just make sure you can dedicate yourself to doing something like that, and see if you can work our a situation with your high school counselors to sort of legitimize it.

I really appreciate your advice!

If you’re a rising junior, then by application-time, you will know the scores for any AP tests you take this year (and thus be able to self-report). As others have said, I would really recommending doing that–I have an friend (alumna of Harvard) who, having grown up in a small rural town, says that self-studying for AP Bio her junior year really boosted her app.

SATIIs are easier to prep for…consider addressing 2 or three of those…get the books…these are only one hour exams…but do require preparation. there are entire threads on testing on CC with lots of advice
