i seriously want to just give up
i just got dropped out of APCHEM
with a C
whats the lowest GPA you can get in with?
and i really need to know if people get C's on transcripts and still get in??
im going to shoot myself if no one answers

I'm assuming you got a C and you're in your junior year. If you are a senior, they won't see it until after you are accepted so it's not as much of an issue.

If you are a junior and got a C, it is not the end of the world. Have you looked at the UC website with the requirements? You can calculate your UC eligibilty based on grades/SAT -ACT/ SAT II scores. While UCLA is highly competitive and the entering freshman gpa was over a 4.0 last year, there have been kids who get in with a little lower. You will get an extra grade point for that C so it's not as bad. People with a C do get in....but if you have no hook(sports etc) you must focus on getting excellent grades, good scores and writing a stellar essay. The essay questions are online and most likely won't change. They are challenging for most of my students, so I suggest you start looking at them early.

On another note, please relax. Don't joke about giving up and hurting yourself. This makes counselors and parents reading nervous. There is a school for everyone. It's obvious that you feel UCLA is it for you, but realize that we tell our 4.0 students that UCLA, CAL and UCSD are a crapshoot. They are extremely competitive and you should know this right now going in. Even if you aced the chemistry class, you may have gotten rejected. Don't focus on one place....trust me, you'll be much happier with a number of schools that will work for you in your mix.

thank you so much for replying
its my junior year and i majorly tanked a final.
never thought it could happen

i have plenty of Ec's on my list right now
but what should i get on my SAT score?
and all im looking forward to is UCLA at this point
no kidding.

i just want to kill myself right now.
._.
do drops on your transcript look super bad?
like REALLY bad?
i can make up for this with my second half of junior semester im assuming?
andd..do they usually care for the weighted or unweighted?

scoooter, i think u have some issues. i think u need some help

what sort of help?

First, by continually stating that you want to kill yourself, you sound childish and over reactive-not exactly UCLA material. I realize you are disappointed, but it's never too early to learn that judgements are made immediately by the way you present yourself. Try and sound like a responsible, hardworking student and not like a whiney kid.

Did you enter a regular chemistry class when you were dropped from AP? I hope so. If you did, then there is actually a place on the UC application that you explain anything relating to your application that you feel needs clarification. This is where you would explain the Chemistry issue. They will take the weighted GPA based on your schools a-g list. A class must be listed on your schools a-g list as honors and accepted by UC to receive the extra grade point. Your counselor should be able to provide this list for you.

Go on the UC website and plug your weighted gpa in and you can get an idea what you need to score to be eligible. Keep in mind uc eligible and UCLA level are very different. You will need a good GPA (3.8 minimum) good test scores and solid essays to even be in the running. There are lots of different reasons that lower GPAs are accepted, but this is definitely rare. Athletes, URM etc. We had student get into the dance program with a 3.1...but she danced.

dont worry i mean mentally kill myself
and as for the 3.83 GPA mimimum, is that unweighted or weighted?
because ..seems like everything is failing me right now.
should i still keep trying and try to get a 4.12 gpa 2nd semester. or just give up? because there wouldnt be a point if i couldnt even get into UCLA.

OK

1. The 3.8 is just my estimate based on what I see happens where I work- competitve public in CA.

2. Go to class, focus, do your work, try hard, ask for help when you need it and do your best. That's what it takes...and in reality, sometimes all that is not enough for your dream school.

3. I'm talking academic weighted GPA. A-G list.

You really need to take a few steps back and exam some other options regarding schools. Don't take this the wrong way, but I feel like your setting yourself up for disappointment. With a 4.1 you should be psyched about all your possibilities, not fretting over UCLA.

Couldn't agree more.

Does OP have a 4.1 If so, that's awesome.

Hey OP, I am a Jr. too. I just finished my first semester and let me tell you, I got a C in AP Bio.

That class is really hard. Literally, really hard. There's another AP Bio teacher in the Dept, and her class slacks off and everybody gets As. They all cheat, the teacher knows, and she's all like "Whatever" I sometimes feel "Why did I get Mrs ________ and not the other teacher? It really feels unfair.

Anyway, I also plan on applying to UCLA. Though, I hold an International status and living in CA, so it will be way harder to get in. Still, like another poster said, don't make yourself sound like whining. Try being more mature and don't overreact. At first, when I knew that I wold end up with a C in Bio, I felt like the world was crushing on top of me. While my peers whine over a B in a class, I had a C. However, I learned to be more mature and learn that a C in an academic class is NOT the end of the world. AND, if you can explain well why you got a C and what you learned from it in the apps, then that would be a major plus. Don't take failures in the negative way. Rather, take those failures and challenges as life-changing experiences to learn from.

A 4.1 is decent, but the average UCLA admit had a 4.26, and that was last year. A year from now, I'll say that the average will be 4.28 for an admit.

I don't know, until the summer before senior year, I didn't really care about college - I wanted a high GPA and SAT for myself. Looking at my options now (just got a Regents' letter), it's all just the icing on the cake. I guess what I'm trying to say is - don't work for the college - treat college as an extra benefit. Oh, and even if UCLA becomes a safety for you, your heart will then just be set on Stanford. You can never be satisfied....

i'm also a jr. at my school this is the first year we could take ap courses. i was used to getting a's and was pretty much devastated over my first B in ap english. but honestly its unrealistic to hold urself to the same standards as freshman or sophomore year when ur now taking college courses. to me u sound like a smart person who just worries too much-(been there not fun). so just relax and do ur best from now on.

Scooterflies:

My son got into UCLA last year and he had a "B" second semester of regular chemistry.
Look at some other schools, there are lots of great ones out there. UCLA is wonderful, but a bit of a pressure cooker.

you are worrying too much.

try harder and keep working hard at it. there's nothing you can do now about that C. all you can do is do better next time.

btw two of my friends got into UCLA with a C. its still possible.

I understand why you're freaking out. Obviously you really love UCLA; I'm set on Berkeley, and often freak out about matters like this.

I'd tell you not to worry. A friend of mine with the same/similar GPA dropped out of AP bio because she had a D; her counselor told her that she still has a good chance at UCLA. Keep trying, though. As others have said, explain it in the app. You should be fine. =)

WOW, im so glad of all the replies im getting
its just that ive literally never done this bad in life
and everything around me started falling apart because getting in is such a important matter to me even though in the larger scope of life, this means nothing. My parents were so understanding that i just cant help feeling even guiltier.
Even so, my social life is so busy, i mean really busy.
thats why i need to cut down on having so much fun right now

im so happy for the moral support in here
and im really not trying to be whiny, it was just sudden depression

and i really want to know if UCLA would look at my separate GPA's or look at them separately year by year?????

and if the 1st semester senior GPA scores are counted in your app??

:)thanks guys

I got a few B's in high school and still got admitted to UCLA Engineering...

but you didnt have any C's...
and everyone. almost everyone get's B's

so freaking out about UCLA here
no one has ANY idea
because my dad has property there
and i get to live there for free

hey, I have C's. Didn't you read my post? Yes, I freaked out when that happened. I was in your situation, but I then quickly learned that there's nothing I can do. You know, ***** happens. So what? You can learn from those bad situations and try to better yourself by making more effort. I know I'm definitely going to, now that I have my officially 2 C's in my first semester of JR year transcript

And I want to go to UCLA too. UC admissions can be random at times. Or you know what, Admissions in general is random. True, the numbers are important. But so are the other factors (extenuating circumstances, ECs, Personal statements, essays, etc)

UCLA will look at your GPA for your soph and junior years. They will look at your grades in the a-g courses so no yearbook, PE etc. They don't care what you did each year, they care about the overall GPA in meeting the a-g requirements. In reality, in most cases, that average must be very close to a 4.0. I disagree with others who say it is the unweighted gpa. If UC accepts your course as weighted on your school's a-g list, you get the extra grade point in your aplication eligibilyty.

UC will not see you senior grades before they make a decision on your acceptance. Even if you try and send them in January, they will not look at them.

The UCs never see an official transcript (on ANY grades you receive) until after you've been accepted.
