If not accepted into major of choice?

Hi,

What happens if one is not accepted into first or second major of choice..but have been accepted into UT as auto admit?

Still waiting to hear about Engineering major/ Petroleum or Chemical.

Thanks.

Here’s what we were told last summer when my son and I met with an admissions advisor in Austin on a visit (as an alumni, I very much wanted him to attend): at the end of your first year you can apply again for admission to your major; if not admitted, you will continue with your gen ed courses, and then apply again at the end of your sophomore year.

Essentially, at that point you will either declare a major which WILL admit you, or transfer out.

Neither was acceptable to my son. He was told he would likely be admitted to UT, but not to his major (at the time, engineering).

He decided it was too much of a gamble, and didn’t like the anxiety of even thinking about it, hah!

Perhaps you could contact an academic advisor at UT for this major. Good luck to you.

Chemical and petroleum engineering are among the most competitive majors at UT. I would say you need to have at least 2100-2150 of SAT scores (or the ACT equivalent) and be in the top 2-3% of your class to have a decent chance of getting accepted.
