I have heard that it is nearly impossible for students who are not in the top ten percent to get into UT. How hard is it really?

What are my chances:
SAT CR: 640
SAT M: 690

I was not in the top 10% and got in. I know quite a few people that are not top 10% and got in but I know many people who are barely out of the top 10% and didn’t get it. It all depends on more factors than simple test scores. How far are you out of the top 10%? How big is your school? What are your EC’s and volunteer hours? What is your GPA?

For me it was only ACT+ top 13% and that was it.. you know how I know?.. because I had 1 EC and no clubs or community service hours. Bless public schools!

Are you instate or out of state. If your in the top 15% with a 1330 your in decent shape. Depending on the school you apply to, you stand a farely good chance.

i’m from in state

It’s not “nearly impossible” at all…

Only around 70% of the class is filled up by top 10% admits, meaning about a third of the people at UT are like you.

i’m at 19% of about 700

I would say 50/50.. Try working on getting your standardized test scores up. Definitely, I mean definitely take the ACT. You could stand to improve quite a bit if you good at Science.

its very hard to get in if you arent top 10% and instate
work on your test scores

what do you think are “good” test scores?

Some students are also admitted by something called Summer CAP. They are admitted as students, but have to start in the summer right after they graduate high school. Its one way non top 10% can get in, especially if the SAT/ACTisn’t exactly stellar. I think a couple hundred students qualify under this program.

Its not that hard.. but if you have a 1400 your in good shape. A friend of mine had like inbetween 20-25%, but had like a 1410 and got in without even having to go do summer program.

Its not called summer cap, its called the summer program. Cap program is for students who didn’t get into summer or regular and have to go through UTSA UTA(arlington) or some other UT college.

I’ve been hearing from a few people that they are doing away with the CAP program

Well in any case, it will take a few years before anything would go into action even if they did decide to do away with it. I would say it would take at least 3-4 years to get rid of it.

if you get admitted into the summer program, do you automatically get admitted to the university of you attend the summer?

“I have heard that it is nearly impossible for students who are not in the top ten percent to get into UT.”

No it’s not. Remember that UT has 45,000+ students.

If you get into the summer program and take summer, you are admitted to the university

oh okay, that answers all my questions. thank you!

UT has a ridiculous amount of applications to sort through, this had its advantages and disadvantages.

Disadvantage:

Advantage:

UT practically has a formula for determining who gets accepted/rejected, the only other big factor is what your intended major/field will be in.

besides what everyone else said, it sometimes depends on who you know when writing recommendations.

when i came on this board as a senior in high school, i was told i wasnt getting in because i guess i’m ■■■■■■■■ or something. i got in and i’m in the communications school. a part of the reason why i got in was probably the connections i had with my internship and the “special” projects i was involved in school.

so pretty much, stand out, write an unique essay, get someone of “high power” to write a rec (or well sign a rec), and just dont let something you hear from a third-rate source get you down.

oh, maybe i should add i’m out-of-state.

I was in the top 26% and got accepted. My SAT scores weren’t that much better than yours either, so it’s definitely possible.
