If on the waitlist, by how many points?

Hi, I am just wondering, for those of you on the waitlist, by how many points are you off by? You can call them and ask for your point total. I was off by 12 points, so I am trying to get a general sense of how much other people are off by.

My son’s off by 40 points. Very disheartening as a parent. He really wanted to go there. He has worked so hard to take the most challenging classes and keep his GPA up to not get in. Was rejected from UCLA too. Waiting for Cal.

Are you going to appeal? My son was 150 points off and we are submitting appeal.

He was denied admission. 4.26 W GPa, 1940 SAT 730,700 sat11. They failed to count an AP class and said he was light on EC"S Christ–the boy swims 20+ hours a week, has a job, and participates actively in clubs–Went to CIF for swimming for 3 years and varsity letter–awards etc… The downside-he is white with successful parents and goes to good school Reverse discrimination–why aren’t people protesting about that?

I was going to, but I really have no new information that would help. My counselor told me that they were going to accept less people off appeals this year because this is the first year they were doing waitlists.

I feel your pain, but I would still call the admissions office and talk about his application. I really had to push to find out that there was “compelling information” to appeal. The person on the phone wanted to do as little as possible to give info. Only gave me the “can” answers to my questions until she figured out I was not going away. Then tried to tell me to get my son to call–impossible because of his “light” extracurriculars until 6PM. He submitted an appeal the next day on-line. You can attach two documents–including a letter of recommendation to your appeal. We submitted a transcript for them to review. She was not positive about the appeal, but he just had to try. That way he knew he did everything he could to get in. I think your chances are better on the wait list.

does anyone have the point chart of uc san diego? there is one for davis, are they the same?

UCSD point chart: [UC San Diego Comprehensive Review Admission Process: Freshman Selection, Fall 2010](http://www.ucsd.edu/prospective-students/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/freshmen/process.html)

Hey ss1202, did you confirm with admissions officer that you were going to send an appeal? In their FAQ’s, they ask to first give them the reason for appeal through phone and then if they approve, then to send in the appeal.

My son has a 4.45 (3.80 unweighted), 2140 SAT (790 Math, 690 Writing, 660 Critical Reading), 790 MathII , 740 Chem, will have taken 9 AT classes, for which he’s gotten 4 or 5’s on the AP tests. He had a job for 3 years and played varsity tennis, cocaptain etc. When we called it didn’t sound like they’d given much of any points to the EC; it seemed to my husband that the admissions person would only count the EC if he demonstrated leadership. Zero points for his essay (because he didn’t demonstrate adversity). Geez, what’s a kid to do? I don’t know what else he could have done to get in there. The counselor told us there was really no grounds for appeal (no new or compelling information that wasn’t included on his application). You can’t change what’s already on the application (like my son didn’t include the co-captain bit on the tennis team). The information has to be totally new. I’m almost over it. Waiting for him to hear from USC and Cal. Ironically, he’s fine about it. Happy with his safety (UCI Honors). But I am bummed for him.

yes, i did confirm the appeal was coming. I think that you need to talk to them first to see if you have compelling reasons. I think that that term could be subjective–if you really want to go there, appeal. The worst is that they will say no again.

Geez, with those stats, I would really be bummed too. It doesn’t make sense. He should have gotten in with his academic strength alone. I would request a detailed point total for his academics alone! My son, too is in the UCI crowd, not honors tho. He is OK with it because we have supported him in a very positive way, but I am so bummed that UCSD hasn’t worked out because that is where he really wanted to go despite other acceptances-many back east. It seems as if they don’t discriminate about the quality of the EC"s. He mentioned that in his appeal, also involved heavily in the church, Im with you–what is a kid supposed to do? There are only so many hours in the day! By the way, church activities “don’t count”.

It is the loss of opportunity that is the most distressing. Your son is more than qualified to attend UCSD–good luck at Cal and USC

I’m obviously not over it yet :)

Thanks for your support ss1202. The lack of choice is exactly what bothers me the most. If he chooses to go to UCI after evaluating other schools then good for him. But, how does a kid like him (and like many many others here on CC alone) end up without a choice? We have definitely learned some lessons from this experience and would have applied to other schools as well. He really wanted to stay in Cali (we’ve moved around alot) and didn’t apply to schools out east. In retrospect, that was a big mistake. Again, thanks for your support. Good luck to all of us on the waitlist who opted in.

cal rules is your son part of the ELC? And I’m almost sure he’s taken 40+ a-g courses. The academic calculation alone (still unsure of the a-g scoring though) would more than likely give him 7900+ points, even without ECs or anything. That sounds completely wrong that he didn’t get in. Those stats sound UCLA level imo lol

Ok, going to sound dense, but not sure what ELC is. Going to google now. My guess is that he is not since I don’t know what it is :)

ELC is given to the top four percent of high school students (CA high school students as far as I know), based on GPA (class rank). With his GPA I don’t see how he could not be ELC. And having ELC gives an extra 300 points toward the application.

Thanks for the help. I did look it up. He wasn’t in the top 4% when they assessed that at his HS but I expect that he is now. He did get into our local UC (UCI). We’ll see. Thanks to everyone for your support. Good luck to all.

ss1202, what are you trying to say with the statement "The downside-he is white with successful parents and goes to good school Reverse discrimination–why aren’t people protesting about that? "
I have successful parents and i go to a good school, but I got in. Plus if your son swims so much why doesn’t he go to school for swimming. plus a 1940 SAT with a 4.26W gpa…wow can you say grade inflation. He didn’t even break 2000 and with the UC’s being that much more competitive this year I dont see why you think your son deserved to get in.
