ss1202 you said "By the way, church activities “don’t count”. Yes they do. My son applied with volunteer hours spent in church functions and he was given max volunteer points for that.
I agree with your reverse discrimination comment. The only way to get special circumstances/personal challenges points, for example, is if your special circumstance/ personal challenges story generates a certain number of sobs. You can work your butt off accomplishing or overcoming something but if, like you say, youre from a well off family and/or go to a good (or private) school youre not likely to generate a sufficiently high tear factor. No sobs, no points.

@calrules, you really should have had your son apply for more safeties. i applied to riverside, san jose state, and davis as backups. irvine was a backup too, but looks like im going there

@ss1202, if you feel bad about your perceived “affirmative action” i can assure you asians have it much worse. look at demographics after the prop was passed in the 90s to legally ban AA. asians gained the most, with slight drop in caucasians.

calrules and ss1202, you calculated the weighted gpa, what’s your kid’s UCGPA (weighted only up to 8 semesters/points of APs, no more basically 4 ap classes get to count for extra points)?

i was waitlisted with a 4.2 ucgpa, 2260 SAT, 800 physics, 700 us history, all 4s and 5s on APs. First place silicon valley synopsys science fair in physics, runner up at state. first place state in piano (california) and i got onto a tv show from that (stuupid me, i didnt put that on my app). 200 hrs of community service (through american studies, key club, and salvation army), soccer, swim, and IRC (MUN). maybe i accidentally wrote F*** UCSD in my essay, i dont know, i should call on monday.

but looking at it now, im probably still going to take UCI’s CHP over regular entry into UCSD, so i dont care so much anymore

edit:

@fuddman, wow, really? my friend got into ucsd with regents and 20K a year. hes valedictorian, unweighted 4.0, insane amount of APs, 2260 SAT, 800s on his subjects, and his band won some competition thingy, really awesome. oh, and he plays a varsity sport too. the point is: he got in. hes not disadvantaged. all i can say is, sad i didnt try as hard in high school as he did.

Tsang, did you call to see how many points you were off by?

i plan to tomorrow

@TsangBokyan
Agree about the asian part. XP

@ss1202
Well off with successful parents does not put you at a disadvantage. I wrote my essay about how grateful I am to be so well off, and they didnt count that against me. My parents make 170k plus a year, and I live in one of the most overpriced cities in CA. XP
I think it was most likely the SAT score… I have friends with 2100 sat i that didnt make it. GPA counts for a lot, but it depends on the rigor of your school. representatives for the UCs came to my school and told us that you are compared to your peers, not all applicants, so if a lot of people in your school have higher GPA, then your 4.26 does not mean much. Extracurriculars also do not count for AS much at UCSD.

Not to mention, my guidance counselor (who used to work in the UC admissions office) said that they cannot even see your ethnicity when they consider your application. Even by your last name, they can’t assume because there are a lot of people with parents of diff. ethnicity (mixed). So unless your son specifically stated it in his application…

Calrules: I have similar stats to your son and was denied. Lots of kids with high GPA and SATs were denied because they didn’t have the ELC, Low Income, Hardship, Leadership, Service etc. points.

You may want to double check the UC GPA, it can’t be 4.45 with
a 3.8 unweighted. Remember that you get extra points only for 4 year long AP or CL classes. At most it can add 0.33 to unweighted
if your son took six a-g classes per year in the relevant years.
Any B’s or less in a-g classes would hurt.

I got into UCI Honors too … that’s supposed to mean the top 10% of admits.

I may end up going OOS because I got into a top tier engineering program, UCLA/UCSD where I was denied are ranked #19

i was off by 26 points… TT^TT
