If there is a God

This is why Dawkins is an epic failure:

[YouTube - Richard Dawkins Stumped (Hysterical)](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo_KIRTa7jI)

Listening can lead to believing, however.

He argues how universal morality is essentially true within the first few pages of Mere Christianity. Some people choose to think against The law of Human Nature, some choose to think for it. Like any law, it can be adhered to or broken. Circumstances cannot undermine moral decisions. Murder is still murder - an unlawful killing, whether it be to a man on the street or a child in the womb. The death penalty is still the death penalty - a lawful killing, upheld by a state’s law, whether it happen to a child or a man. Though I have not completely thought through the death penalty as a moral issue in and of itself, murder would still be immoral regardless of circumstance and “lawful death” would be justifiable. The latter is not to say that immoral laws cannot be established; it is to say, if one were to be moral, one would be subject to one’s government unless it causes someone to be killed unjustly, against the moral standard. That is when legal punishment turns to murder. And then, of course, we should consult the law of Human Nature to see what would truly be just.

Could you clarify the last two sentences of your second paragraph? there was no verb to follow =P

Concerning the experience/logic - I am not speaking in governmental terms, but rather literary trends. Benjamin Franklin relied on logic; Thoreau relied on experience, and then it flip-flopped again.

i repeat myself again…

There is something inside of us that cannot have been developed over time that desires to fulfill needs, personal or otherwise, by some sort of means.

…why is it there?

Liist, apparently you have not heard the story behind that video or the reasons for his pause.

Here is his story behind it with a full answer along with it:

[The Information Challenge](http://secure5.ozhosting.com/skeptics/articles/dawkins.htm)

You really believe everything you see on the internet? You’re probably one of the people who also believes [YouTube - Ronaldinho: Touch of Gold](http://youtube.com/watch?v=lsO6D1rwrKc) is real.

And as for Tanstripe, what are you even talking about? The need to eat food? The need to procreate? More specifics about what “it” is you are talking about would be nice before asking why “it” was there.

^ amen to Dawkins.

You need to prove:

1) This “thing” exists in you.
2) This “thing” exists in all of us, as you have claimed.
3) This thing does indeed meet the criteria you have listed.
4) There are not other reasons that logically explain why your “thing” exists.

After you have done this, we can actually have a conversation.

I think the “thing” being talked about is human empathy, caring and the need for companionship. There are a lot of evolutionary explanations for that however.

Believe in god if you want, or don’t believe in god if you want. Just don’t annoy or hurt people in the process.

Evangelical Christianity and militant Islam, you guys fail miserably in this regard.

Nobody knows that there is a God with stone cold evidence but thats the whole purpose we are supposed to have faith! thats the purpose of religion, faith!

yea faith! except for the fact that people claim to know exactly what “god” wants them to do and that he talks directly to them, then they use this to try and gain influence over others

“they use this to try and gain influence over others”
if they be true followers of God, then their goal is not to gain influence over others, but rather for He (Him?) to be glorified. It should have no selfish motivation, but solely selfless.

Yeah thats just people who are messed up in the heads who think that…or then again it could be true you don’t that… and its other peoples choices who the choose to follow or worship

If we believe everything evolved what placed the very first things to evolve. Where did the molecules that form the universe come from. You may not believe in my God (and thats okay) but a lot of people who dont practice religion believe there is some kind of supreme being who began life.

Well said.

There’s a huge difference between having faith and being deluded in your own baseless self-righteousness enough to bomb abortion clinics or skyscrapers.

Also, in my opinion, religion and faith are used when people go beyond the limits of their knowledge about their surroundings and the universe. Once someone sees how insanely complex things in reality actually are and they do not understand how they work, their first step is to explain it through an intelligent designer or a higher power (aka religion).

Something similar would probably occur if you brought a computer/car/gun or some other modern gadget back with you to ancient civilizations. Just imagine what people back then would think of what we have now, there’s no doubt that they’d believe that you were some type of god (or demon ;)).

I’ve heard this argued by other well known people much better, but I’m just paraphrasing the argument here, but it seems to fit fairly well. I think that instead of relying on religion and faith when the world becomes overwhelming and seems too hard to comprehend, we should look to further our knowledge and strive to understand it to the best of our knowledge.

Just because the origin of the universe is not know to us now does not mean that it will remain unknown forever.

I don’t believe in God necessarily, but I don’t know for sure. Everything in my life has pointed to there isn’t a higher power, but going to a Catholic school we had to learn all of these theories about why He/She/It/They exist. The only one that stuck out in my head is the Original Force Theory. If nothing can move unless a force works on it, then what was that original force? And it is that question that has kept me from being an Atheist.

Believing in God is a good way to feel safe in the world. Just knowing that someone else is keeping everything in balance will help you sleep better at night.

Dude. It doesn’t work when you test Him, it’s in the bible.
