I want to major in Biology.

Is my URM status (hispanic) very beneficial?

Regarding your test scores, randomhispanic, my advice to you generally would be to send ALL of your scores to every school. Admission committees are not looking for reasons to keep you out, they are looking for reasons to admit (even at the competitive schools). And an improvement in ACT/SAT from Jr. year to Sr. year shows your willingness to work hard and apply yourself, too.

Your ECs look strong.

I would be very concerned about your GPA and prepare for your next round of tests; that should help.

I think to be really competitive at UNC you will want a higher GPA.

Here are the Freshman Profile stats from the UNC Website:

Rank in Class
75.8% reported a high-school rank in class
79.6% ranked in top ten%
13.6% ranked in second ten%
7.4% ranked first
18.3% ranked first, second, or third
43.8% ranked in the top ten

GPA
91.7% reported a high-school GPA
89.2% had GPA of 4.0 or higher
Average GPA was 4.47*
*For those students from high schools that report GPAs on a weighted 4.0 scale

SAT
96.6% reported at least one SAT I score
Average SAT score (Critical Reading + Mathematics) was 1303
Middle 50% scored between 1210-1410
Middle 50% ranges for the three subscores:
Critical Reading: 590700
Mathematics: 620-710
Writing: 590-690

ACT
32.6% reported at least one ACT score
Average score was 28.7
Middle 50% scored between 26 and 31

I’m not saying you won’t get admitted; I’m saying your chances will be better if you can get your GPA up. It might help if they are somewhat familiar with your high school – if they have had successful admits in the past and know that your school is academically rigorous.

With a competitive school/tough OOS admission (like UNC) my son was shooting for ACT/SAT scores that were above the range of middle 50%

I certainly think you are close at the very least – just keep working and don’t get senioritis (you won’t have much chance with 4 APs).

UNC is only 20 or so % OOS Students from what I’ve heard. I don’t go to the school, I live by it. You will be more likely if you get your GPA up and your test scores up a little bit.

As a rule OOS students at Chapel Hill are the very top students or recruited athletes.

Right now your GPA would be too low for an in state student. You will also need to take at least two SAT II tests.

But as was stated above by VailsMom - “my advice to you generally would be to send ALL of your scores to every school”. Very best of luck to you… Because you never know…
