If u were to judge a restaurant by its menu, Rice stinks

I mean their admissions dept stinks in communication. A lot of pre-marketing before the app. And then nothing. A big zero. No communication for 6 weeks after the app is submitted. Contrast this to other universities of its caliber.

yeah, but once you get in, you'll be happy...

so quit whining and dont go there.

still waiting for email

theendu>yeah, but once you get in, you'll be happy...

You are probably right. That is the whole point of the msg. For a university of Rice caliber, its admission department sucks. Anyway, once you are there, you don't have to deal w the admission folks.

My guess is that they are swamped. I know that it is hard to wait! The rest of the university runs very smoothly, though!

prob. the worst metaphor of all time...

couldn't you have just gone with the book my cover metaphor lol

I feel like the metaphor fit...seeing as though rice is a food item.

Bravo, OP, bravo!

I love Rice's admissions department. I don't think that at any other school I would have had an admission office say to me during the second semester of my freshman year, "Oh, you're NYSkins1? Last year we were shouting your name down the hall whenever one of us got your app." (I have a unique last name, so this makes sense if you're using my real name).

The admissions office at Rice is extremely personal. I may not be 100 percent correct about this, but I have heard that after they accept the clearly strong applicants and reject the clearly weak ones, each admissions officer picks out a handful of people that they claim as "theirs." Then they have meetings in which they argue why one of their people should be admitted over one of someone else's people. That's why you haven't received anything; they're too busy getting to know each applicant personally to send you a form letter that says, "Dear , thanks for your application to Rice. We're busy reviewing it. Here's another brochure filled with information that you already know, but we want to make sure you don't forget about us. Good luck, ___!"

Very valid point. I don't believe Rice Admissions is incompetent at all. I actually really do like the personal aspect of it.

What exactly do you want the admissions committee to do? Hold your hand, tell you it'll be okay and then tuck you into bed at night?

If you were to judge a person by their ability to make coherent metaphors, you, sir, fail.

If you're having trouble making the connection, that's a function of your intelligence, not mine. Also, someone already commented on the supposed weakness of the metaphors in this thread. I'm not impressed.

But what do I have to worry about? I'm already in. :)

Um, wasn't really talking to you and no, I'm not having trouble understanding it, it's just a bad metaphor. Don't assume to know anything regarding my intelligence. I was not trying to impress anyone, merely making a comment to the original post regarding their weak metaphor.

Congratulations on getting in, obviously modesty and tact are your strongest suits.

So, you can assume that I'm immodest and tactless, but I can't assume that you're unintelligent? I'm slightly amused. :)

I'm not trying to flaunt anything. I was actually quite humbled by my acceptance, because there were weak spots on my application that would have merited rejection.

I mistakenly thought that your post was directed to me and responded in kind. Since it wasn't, I apologize and retract my statements. You should quote the post that you're responding to in the future to avoid confusion. ;)

Alright, well then I'm also sorry about the confusion and apologize for presuming to know about your modesty and tact. But like I could've quoted, you could've asked who I was directing my comment to, so in that sense, we both made easily avoidable mistakes.

Your metaphor was easy to follow by the way, and was actually coherent. I just thought your response was funny since I felt like I was on your side of the argument haha.

No hard feelings either way :)

Yes, exactly, which is why I was confused, haha. :)

Fight, Fight, Fight!

Soulside J>>What exactly do you want the admissions committee to do? Hold your hand, tell you it'll be okay and then tuck you into bed at night?

That will be really nice, Soulside, won't it? But I am not aware of any adcom that does it. Let me know if you do. In the meantime, what I am looking for is a simple acknowledgement that they have received the application, give login id to check the status. By contrast, Carnegie Mellon has been periodically updating my status page as follows. If Rice has to grow up, hopefully, some topdog at Rice is reading this, they will fire some people in the admissions dept/IT dept, and make sure not to lose the mindshare of the applicants at the right time. For me, inspite of all this Rice is still a top choice.

Soulside Journey, what were the weaknesses in your app? I have to know everything about people getting admitted because it makes me less anxious, even though everything I hear makes my admission seem less likely...
