@MaineLonghorn I think your nephew made a smart move, it’s VERY hard to get into McCombs from CAP. Did he go to Westlake too?
I recently took a tourist tour of Dallas and was struck by the similarities between Westlake Hills and Highland Park so I wasn’t too surprised to see similar UT stats. I was a bit surprised at Westwood’s numbers, for some reason I had thought they were a much larger school.
Oh, I’m sorry to hear about that. I have a friend that had a DD that was a Val at Austin High, she did end up going to UT but only because the Ivy’s she was accepted to proved unaffordable. She ended up being very happy with UT and couldn’t imagen having gone anywhere else.
HP is the highest enrollment rate outside of the Austin area. I’ve heard that not many choose CAP at HPHS. However, there are a decent number (at the bottom of the class?) that end up a Austin CC and pledge a UT fraternity. If they do well enough at ACC, they transfer into UT for economics and they’re good. Is Business at OU or Arkansas better than econ at UT? Guess it is if you want to be an accountant but what about finance?
Admission rate to the school is 100% if you are within the auto-admit category. However, it is much lower for all others. The overall admission rate and stats are not particularly useful because they blend both applicant categories together.
In addition, some popular majors (e.g. CS, engineering majors, business) are additionally competitive; admission to the school (even within the auto-admit category) does not guarantee admission to the major.
FYI, since alot of this thread focuses on business school admissions, at a McCombs admitted student dinner held back in March for the entering Class of 2023, we were told that McCombs acceptance rate for this application cycle was 19%.
Also, we were given a handout with stats for the 2018 Admission cycle (last year) and they were the following:
Average SAT: 1408
Average ACT: 32
Average Rank: 5%
Applied: 8,034
Admitted: 1,835
Enrolled: 1,033
UT also published that in state acceptance rate for Non auto admit students was below 15%. At our private school, it is not unusual for students admitted to Ivies to get rejected by UT, as they were just outside the top 6%. So yes, kids with 4.0 and 1550 scores are rejected regularly, while those with lesser credentials are admitted. Outside of auto admits, it can be hard to predict.
