If wait listed, how long do you wait?

Reading past results, i see that it is a real likelihood to get wait listed for an Ivy way into June. Most other offers say by May 1st. Do you have to accept another, pay a certain amount of money and then dishonor the offer?

Harvard will not know how many students will accept their offer of admission until after the May 1st deadline. So, waitlisted students must:

Confirm they want to remain on Harvard’s waitlist by May 1st

Confirm their acceptance at another college by May 1st

Pay a deposit (if required) to another college by May 1st.

After May 1st, Harvard starts reviewing waitlisted students. If they call and say a slot has opened up for you, you must decline your acceptance at the other college, and forfeit your deposit at the other school.

Waitlisted students are notified anytime between mid-May and the end of July. In past years though, there haven’t been many students taken off the waitlist, so they’ve closed the list around mid-June.

One other thing: if you agree to be placed on a school’s WL and they indeed make an offer to you later, you’re not compelled to take that offer. You can still say NO.

Most schools usually say that the waitlist window is from X date to Y date: after Y date, no further invitations will go out – rather than string people along into August.

A student is allowed to accept WL spots from more than one school too.

The unusual circumstance could occur where a student’s preferences are A, then B, then C. Only C offers a spot while A and B offer Waitlist status. The student accepts C’s spot. Later B offers one off the WL. Student simultaneously withdraws from C and accepts B. Later A calls and offers a spot. The student, if she chooses can withdraw from B to accept A.

Well, the last girl from my school to go to Harvard (like 12 years ago) got waitlisted. She got off the waitlist in August, I guess right before school started.

Goodness, this thread has started very early this year. iluvbooks94-- Harvard in recent (last 5 or so) years has closed the wait list by the end of June. Most students who get off the WL have it happen around the 20th or so of May with two or so smaller tranches each about 10 days a part thereafter. Of course, none of this is official–but it has been the practice in recent years.

But goodness, there will be lots on this subject after April 1st–no need to think about this yet!
