If we choose majors in the end of soph, why are we required to choose a major now?

When we apply for UCs, why do we need to choose a major if we’re supposed to choose later. I seriously have no idea what majors to choose right now. Is it easy to transfer to another major later?

it depends on the UC and the college. For example, the College of Letters and Sciences at Cal admits all as undeclared and has you wait til the sophmore-junior year transition to declare, but the College of Engineering at UCB admits to a major on day one.

Just to draw out rider730’s example, at UCSC you’re admitted into a “proposed” major, then you have to declare the major during your first 1 (or 2) quarters (at least for transfers). i.e. I applied as a politics major, and was accepted as a “proposed politics” major.
