If you apply ED or EA to a school and get rejected, can you apply again as RD?

I know this sounds like an odd question, but, if you were to apply EA or ED to a school and faced so many other students who were better qualified and were therefore rejected, could you apply again to that school for regular decision, in the off chance that your chances at acceptance might have improved?

Would one have a chance to be considered twice, after having been rejected the first time?

No. But generally, you only get rejected ED or EA if you wouldn’t get in anyway. You can also get deferred, which means they consider your application during the RD period.

No – not for that year … and I’m pretty sure it’s stated in the EA/ED application info.

I don’t believe so.

Even if you could, in all probability, you’d be rejected again. You’re competing against a lot more students, so even if a smaller percentage of them are better qualified (EA/ED pools are more competitive almost everywhere) a greater number of them are. In addition to that, your app hasn’t really changed.

^ That’s completely misleading.

One CANNOT apply to a school RD once he/she has been rejected during ED/EA WITHIN the same academic year. This is stated on websites of all schools that offer a ED/EA option.

No but you can be defferred from ea or ed and get evaluated again with the rd pool

Colleges are very clear: If you get rejected in ED/EA you are out of consideration for that year. You can apply next year if you wish or as a transfer student.

3 Possible Restrictive Early Action Admission Decisions

Applicant is admitted and has until May 1 to respond to the admission offer

Applicant is denied and can not reapply for Regular Decision admission in the same year

Applicant is deferred to the Regular Decision round, where he/she will receive a final decision by April 1 *

Applicants denied admission under Single- Choice Early Action are not eligible for further consideration.

here is it from the caltech website

If I am denied Early Action, can I reapply Regular Decision?
No. You can only apply once during an admissions cycle. If you are denied admission Early Action, you must wait one full year and reapply for admission (as a freshman or transfer).

Oh, I see. I had no idea of these restrictions.

So, deferrals from EA or ED would be the only way one could be reconsidered for a spot?

Thank you!

Yes, if you apply EA/ED (and all the variations like SCEA/REA etc), you are automatically reconsidered if you are deferred. In fact if you are ED and deferred, you are not required to join that school if you are offered one in RD process i.e. the binding covenant of ED is valid only if the school offers you a spot during the ED cycle. If they defer you, you are treated like a RD applicant as far as your obligations go (e.g. you have until May 1st to accept the offer, if you get it).

@mathemaicism: how is what I said misleading? I said that the OP could not apply.

no, you’re rejected for that school year
