If you are a northeasterner, please come see...

I know I have been talking about this two university many times already, but please let me know what does people in there think about these two schools:

Fordham University, and
Stevens Institute of Technology

If they are better than average, then I am not bother to go. Please let me know what people in Northeast think about these schools.

I’ve never heard of Stevens Institute of Technology, so I would assume it was just some random bad college.

I’ve heard of Fordham, and it does have some reputation. People have heard of it, and they would think you’re maybe slightly smarter than someone who went to a state school, but no one thinks it’s Harvard or anything.

“I’ve never heard of Stevens Institute of Technology, so I would assume it was just some random bad college.”

If you have never heard of a college then do not make statements such as this one. Stevens Institute is a good technical school, I know one or two bright students who attend and are very happy. Post your questions on their board to get the best answers to you questions.

Yeah, I heard Fordham is a good school too, especially my teacher (she was in Boston and study) heard that Fordham is a good school.

I am not sure about Stevens.

Bump up the post for more comments :)

It’s not a bad school at all. The Princeton Review lists it as one of the best 376 schools in the nation, and all of its engineering programs are ABET accredited: [Accredited Programs details](http://main.abet.org/aps/AccreditedProgramsDetails.aspx?OrganizationID=113)

Look them up in the different search engines. Stevens looks like it actually has higher student stats. Check out their career centers and see who is recruiting there. Which one has more classes in areas you’re interested in. It’s not surprising a 17 year old never heard of the school, that doesn’t make it a bad school.

I’ve heard (when I google) that Stevens is a good school in Tri-state region.
My relative that lived in NJ forever and did not know Stevens. But I don’t even know Dartmouth college is an Ivy League school before anyway.

If a school doesn’t have a football team, most Americans have never heard of it.

Conclusion:
Fordham is very good, but not like Ivies. Comparable school would be Tulane.
Stevens sounds good too.

Since both schools requires higher ACT and SAT scores, I assume they are better-than-average schools.

Stevens is a pretty good school. I know a few people that go there for engineering and such. I’m not sure if it’s on par with Fordham but I wouldn’t say it’s EASY to get into.

What does that mean?

What attracted your attention to these two schools? They are very different and don’t seem likely to attract the same kind of student.

Stevens is an engineering college, strong in applied sciences, with good job placement. Fordham is a traditional Jesuit university with a liberal arts core curriculum. What do you want to study? What are your ultimate educational and career goals?

In other words, if you want to be an engineer, look at Stevens. If you want to be a lawyer, look at Fordham.

I don’t want to go for a school that everything (reputation, lectures…)that are just like regular school. In other words, why do I go for a meh school?

Please pardon my English, as my English is not my first language.

Thanks for replying.
I would like to major in Computer Science, and both universities have CS program. Stevens is ABET accredited, but Fordham is not. However, Fordham, in general, has a better reputation than Stevens, even though both schools appears to be a better-than-average school.

Are you a legal resident of any US state? If so, which one?

What are your stats? Maybe the best school you can get into is a meh school. Top schools will require a high score on the TOEFL which, from your postings, may not happen.

First, the OP is likely asian and we all know asians are more focused on prestige. Sorry, just the facts. So to them rankings matter.

Second, I assume the OP is interested in engineering. While Fordham is an outstanding Jesuit school with a 3-2 program in engineering with Columbia (or Case Western), it is not known as a big engineering school. Its strong in business, accounting, communications, english, philosophy, area studies, theology, history, sociology, psychology etc. I recommend it strongly in those areas.

Stevens is an engineering school in Hoboken, with a storied past (Hoboken is very gentrified now, btw). It is also interesting in that it requires a liberal arts core for its students making them very well rounded. I applaud that strongly. Its a fine school. A rough patch recently with a scandal, but that didnt affect academics or its ranking and that school President is now gone. Its wonderful if you want NYC and engineering.

Another option is Manhattan College in Riverdale/Bronx. A beautiful (but small) campus and a VERY strong and respected engineering program there that is very old. Big basketball school as well. Huge rival with Fordham.

Good luck.

noimagination:
I am an American Citizen. I currently live in Louisiana.

tomofbsoston:
Don’t say that lol. I think I should make a template if people ask me for stats b/c I have to post it every 5 minutes.

My Stats:
GPA: 3.8 (weighted) 3.4 (Unweighted)
Ranking: 16/233 (top 10%)
ACT: Not yet
What else should I put in there?

Again, I AM an American Citizen. Yes, my English sounds foreign. Darn! I should have put it as a part of template. Why the darn hell I need TOEFL?

Make sure LSU is on your list. It’s a good school.

Then you will not have to take the TOEFL. But your use of grammar in your posts would indicate that you are not likely to get a very high score on the CR or W portions of the SAT or the verbal portion of the ACT. Also, a 3.4 UWGPA will likely exclude you from top schools.

I know you don’t want to hear this.

noimagination:
Yeah, it is in my safety school list, because it is easy to get in…relatively.

sovereigndebt:
You are right, I am an Asian. Again, I am an American Citizen. And YES, rankings matter (but not that kind).
I see, thanks.
