If you are admitted to one major, then want to switch, is that possible to do at UCLA? Do any majors have special rules? It seems to me that the Business-Economics major is slightly different, since it has a "Pre-" in front of it. So how does this work? If I am admitted to the engineering school, can I switch to anything else?

I would also like to know this. I’m currently admitted as a computer science and engineering major, but I’m not sure if I want to switch to just computer science and if this will be possible :/

If you are in the engineering school, you can easily switch to any major in the College of Letters and Sciences but not vice versa.

The pre-Business Economics major may be switched into like any other major. All students must attain a certain GPA to be admitted into the Business-Economics major, however.

Transferring within the school of engineering is more difficult and you need to consult your counsellor.

Thanks for the answer. That clears things up. Also something I wanted to know–is it really hard to double major or try to obtain simultaenous degrees? Does it complicate things if, say you are in engineering school right now, and also want to pursue something in the College of Letters and Sciences? Is that difficult/improbable? At some schools double majoring is hard because administratively, it is hard to arrange. Other times, it is almost impossible to pull off the course work–how is this at UCLA? I’ve been told that sometimes double majoring is not so much EXTRA work, but more giving up your free class slots where you would be taking electives and exploring, for the requirements for your second major. What is the case here? Thanks!

funnyman4,

I knew an engineer who double majored in Japanese (I was Japanese as a second major.) He had no trouble doing it, either-- he just had to be a little more careful with how he structured his units.

Definitely doable if you’re willing to put in the time and effort. But I suspect that most of the second majors won’t be things that require a ton of extra time, given that engineering is a big time sink to begin with for most people.

I applied as a Biology major and want to switch to a Physiological Science major. What exactly is the process to go through a change of major?

I believe that for L&S majors, they’ll let you switch during summer orientation, as long as you’re not trying to switch in to anything impacted.

For UC’s, it tends to be hard to switch majors o:
