If you are waitlisted by your first choice......

Do you have really the time to "wait"? I mean, don't you have to tell your second choice your decision before knowing the waitlist result? Do most people just give it up and move on to the second choice?

I know that I would give it up. I would rather have a secure spot in one of my schools than have a very small chance at a waitlist in my first choice. I heard waitlists will be very long this year, and I would not want to take that chance.

I applied to St. Andrew’s for my ninth grade year and I was waitlisted. After getting the letter that said I was waitlisted I didn’t hear from the school at all. I don’t know that I would completely give up, but unless you’re one of the top on the waitlist or you contact the school saying you can pay full tuition then I wouldn’t wait around.

It is a good idea if you are waitlisted to contact the school to let them know if you want to stay on the waitlist or be removed from the waitlist. This really helps admissions with keeping their acceptance/waitlist counts accurate.

yes this would help people who are waiting on the waitlist

It really depends on a few things. But if you really want to go there and it is by far your first choice…CALL RIGHT AWAY and tell them that. I know more than one person who was waitlisted at a school that did so because they thought the student would not attend (variety of reasons). A phone call to them stating that the school is your first choice and if an opening came up before April 10 you would take it, could tip the scale if that is why you were WL.
Remember that schools accept more than they plan on attending, so even if 20 people attend another school, they don’t take 20 off the wait list. BUT…if you are an athlete or musician depending on WHO declined the offer, you might get called sooner.
My forever example…if you are an under water tuba player and 3 underwater tuba players just declined - you’ll get the call - possibly even before they go to the actual waitlist.
Movement off waitlists is not common before April 10. Which means you would have to pay (and lose) a deposit to another school if you stayed on it past then.
