If you aren't accepted EA, are you automatically deferred?

Or are some people outright rejected? :(

the bc website under undergrad admissions and then application deadlines says :

"Because it is impossible to gauge the size and quality of the applicant pool at this early stage, admission is more selective for Early Action than during the Regular Admission period. Competitive candidates who are not admitted to Boston College under Early Action will be reconsidered during the Regular Admission evaluation process. Approximately 20% of candidates deferred at Early Action are admitted during the Regular Decision process. Decisions will be communicated in early April. Early Action candidates whose credentials are not competitive for admission to Boston College will be denied in December and may not re-apply in January. This allows such candidates to move forward with the application process at colleges where they will be competitive for admission."

my daughter was deferred , then waitlisted , but it was her reach and not her first choice.

Yes, they do send out some rejections in the EA round.

i wouldnt worry though, unless your scores are way under the averages. im guessing thats what they base your "competetivity" on

what is the meaning and the difference between being deferred or waitlisted at BC during the EA process? CAn one be "waitlisted" now at EA decision or "deferred" which means you'll be reconsidered for spring? I'm trying to understand the difference so that when and if I get the letter/packet, I'll have some understanding. Thanks.

"Deferred" means "We haven't made a decision about accepting/rejecting you yet." "Waitlisted" means "We will let you in if we find out that we have enough room for you (meaning some of the students that we have already accepted end up turning us down to attend other schools)."

Deferrals occur only in the EA round. Waitlists occur only in the RD round.
