weak SAT, great everything else. And as for yer "insignificant" ec's...getting a black belt most definitely isn't insignificant. I say yer in at Penn so you don't need any more chances. If you can, get those SAT's up to near 2200+ and you won't have any soft spots in yer app.

if you want other chances if you don't get into penn, i say you get everything except harvard, columbia, and stanford. good luck.

You fit the intelligent asian stereotype, so you are basically looking at a lottery for the top schools. SAT is quite low, but you qualify with the others.

Wow, didn't anyone follow what happened this year? Most ivies in single digits? 2100 is going to make these schools hard. NYU is doable if you don't need $$.

Hey, I am Korean (considered as a South Korean citizen in the application process, even though I am actually studying in Canada right now) too, and I am a senior this year, so I think I am pretty reliable in terms of this whole process (I got into Princeton & Cornell with financial aid, and waitlisted at Yale).

You know that your GPA/rank is very good. As everyone has said, your SAT is pretty weak. If you want to get into school like Harvard or Stanford, you need to have 2250+ as an international student (you are not a permanent resident, are you?)

Your extracurriculars are certainly not lacking, but they don't stand out either. They won't really help you distinguish yourself from the 20000 other applicants that apply.

At this point, I'd say,

Harvard - reach
UPenn ED - slight reach
Yale - reach
Stanford - reach
Columbia - match/slight reach
Cornell - match/slgith reach
NYU - match
Georgetown - match
Chicago - match
UTexas Honors - match

Hey there, I applied to Penn with a 2100 as well this past year and got rejected (white female, 1/60 class rank, UW GPA of 3.80, average ECs). Early Decision should help you, however, as should your class rank and GPA. Ratings on a scale of: high reach, reach, semi-reach, good fit, likely, safety.

Harvard... HIGH REACH.
UPenn ED... SEMI-REACH. REACH if RD.
Yale.... HIGH REACH.
Stanford... HIGH REACH.
Columbia.... REACH.
Cornell... SEMI-REACH.
NYU... GOOD FIT.
Georgetown... SEMI-REACH.
Chicago... SEMI-REACH.
UTexas Honors... GOOD FIT.

I like your optimism, but you are giving the OP false hope. While I do believe that SAT isn't as important as what most CC'ers say, you still have to be at least in the acceptable range. Good chances at Harvard, Yale, and Stanford with 2100?!?! Are you kidding me??? 2100 is almost like bottom 25% at those schools according to US News Ranking (who provided 25%~75% SAT scores for accepted applicants).

Nevertheless, I have to agree with kyledavid with his second point. Essays in my opinion are underrated at CC. I think they are VERY important, and in fact I think essays are what got me into the schools I got into. Just be honest. Show them who you are. Don't try to fabricate yourself so that you appear to be someone that you think they might like. I think that's the best approach.

I'd say apply to more safeties just in case :)

Harvard: High Reach
UPenn ED: Low Reach
Yale: High Reach
Stanford: Reach
Columbia: Reach (somewhat)
Cornell: Low Reach
NYU: Match
Georgetown: Match to Low Reach
Chicago: Match
UTexas Honors: Match

as much as colleges look for exceptional ECs, they're not gonna bend over backwards and lower the published avg SATs data for the student population because of a non-legacy, non-national athlete, especially since non-international asian americans alr have a slight disadvantage at admissions. Colleges like harvard only look at "everything else" because every serious applicant they've got has stellar grades and SAT scores, and so they need a differentiator. SATs are the first factor and filter, and if he can't get past that, they're not gonna take the rest of his profile and ECs seriously.

I agree the 2100 is low. This might be naive of me, but given your GPA, you could probably rewrite and get a higher score. That said, it's not going to kill your chances alone.

Don't underestimate Penn ED (I'm assuming you're talking Wharton). I'd consider admission there harder than to any of the other Ivies (stats wise the numbers I've heard are 11% ED and 5% RD).
