btw what was your new ACT score?

Chance me back? especially for scholarships?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/603230-chance-confused-texan-surrounded-negative-people.html

Thanks, unfortunately, ACT hasn’t posted my new ACT score yet :(. But I don’t expect it to be better than my SAT scores, if that helps.

Lets start with the things you posted in order: (+ is positive, - is negative, and ~ is neutral)

Gender (+): It is generally agreed that being a woman helps in college admission chances, even if it is slightly so.
Ethnicity (-): Being Asian certainly won’t help your chances, because it is an overrepresented minority.
Location (-): Southern California has many competitive applicants like yourself, and colleges might place higher standards on you because of your location.
College Year 2013 (~)- This is going to be a hugely competitive year, but every year is generally harder.
High School and Rank (+)- Being in a large, competitive school can help, although not everybody’s definition of competitiveness is the same. Your rank, 5%, is ideal for the colleges you are trying to apply to. Top 10-15+ of 450 is recommended for some of your reach schools.

Academics(+)- Unweighted is fine, and weighted is almost perfect. Keep it up! Its excellent for most of your schools, and competitive for the Ivies.

**Notable Info (+)/B- This amount of APs is leaning towards the upper limit of what students take. I’d say this many AP classes shows that you have challenged yourself. 7-11 classes per semester is way above most people and shows dedication to your academics.
2 Foreign languages, if both taken to high levels, like third year or more, is likely to be very impressive, if you also speak Korean and English at home.
You sure are going against the Asian stereotype by focusing less on math and science and more on the humanities, which is good. Colleges don’t want to fill all of their student body with people who are amazing at math.

Scores (+)- A 2300 SAT, even if superscored, is above the median of most ivy league colleges, and far above a lot of of schools on your list. Its great! Your ACT is somewhat less spectacular, but just send your SAT and I’m sure you’ll be fine. Your SAT also showcases your emphasis towards the humanities, with a perfect writing score.

Your SAT II’s are good, but only minimally so for Ivy league colleges. It is commonly suggested that you might want a 2250+ for three combined SAT IIs in order to be in good shape for Ivy league colleges (i.e. 750+ in top three subjects)

Your Junior APs look fantastic, but that Sophomore AP is… ouch! It certainly won’t reflect badly on you, because most people don’t take APs until their Junior year, and it shows that you at least challeged yourself as a Sophomore.
**
Work Experience (+)**- Starting a company is impressive, and being a tutor since 7th grade is icing on the cake. Your 600+ hours of work experience cannot be counted as very lengthy, but it shows more dedication than most other people towards your work. The Poll worker and Cashier are less impressive jobs, since the former is a temporary position, and the latter a conventional job. But good work nonetheless!

Leadership Positions (+)- You showed a variety of interests, but did not overload your list. Leadership is definitely not lacking for you, but they are looking generic. It takes more than simply being elected for VP or President of a club to show leadership, and you have to show how you are a leader in your essays or on your application. Overall, you’ve got a good list.

Communities Service (~)- Its more than most people, but its not as much as some of the dedicated people out there. Those services complement your application nicely but it won’t be a deciding factor as much as your other parts of the App.

Honors and Awards (~)- A few, dare I say, small time awards for some of your activities. Nothing that will immediately hook in colleges, although the MUN and Debate is notable. I think this is the most lacking part of your application, but don’t misunderstand me. Your honors and awards are by no means insignificant, but compared to the rest of your excellent application, it shines the least, in my opinion.
**
Intended Major (~)**- No comments except good luck!

So now for the actual chancing and summary.

In summary, I think your application is extremely well rounded. SAT scores look great, but not incredible, and your SAT IIs definitely needs a bit of work for your top schools. Great chances for most of the schools on your list, although nobody can tell you exactly for the Ivies. Some aspects of your application really spoke a lot about your character, including starting your own tutoring company and your numerous leadership positions. Both GPAs looks awesome, and class rank is definitely competitive. Leadership is strong and Community service are strong, but not super-amazing, and your Honors and Awards are decent.

Your Location and Ethnicity will not help you.

A few parts in your application are very strong even for ivy league applicants, and I see no apparent tragic flaw. Few minuses and many pluses, and the few minuses you can’t help anyways.

Colleges

Columbia- Low Reach/ Reach- Its selective but your Stats are also very competent.
U Penn-Low Reach/ Reach- Great Chances
Yale-Reach- Virtually for everybody
Harvard-Reach- Their admission stats make me wince
Stanford-Reach- Virtually for Everybody
Georgetown-High Match- On second thought, maybe even Match. Your application is really good for GT.
Brown-High Match/ Low Reach- Great chances in, although Brown has rejected some applicants from my schools with similar stats.
Cornell-High Match/ Low Reach- Great Chance
Dartmouth-High Match/ Low Reach- Very competitive for Dartmouth
Duke-Low Reach- Selective, but go for it!
Northwestern- Match- Application looks good for NW
U of Chicago-High Match~- I’m not exactly sure about UChicago, but your Scores are definitely competitive.
U of Virginia-Match, or even Low match

Hope you found this analysis useful!

Sasoo…holy ****…useful is an understatement

Sasoo…jaw on the floor. thank you SO much. I’m sorry i couldn’t provide as much insight on your thread. this was very helpful
wow…

FYI, im looking at the walsh school of foreign service for Georgetown.

Another question…technically I should be able to speak four languages (Korean, English, Spanish, and French).

Korean was my first language.
I speak English fluently (born in U.S.)
Taking Spanish 5AP
Taking French4AP

But I was too scared to take any SAT IIs in those languages and have not taken a language AP test yet. I’m hoping colleges won’t notice that haha. Will this hurt me?

and MORE INFO: (sorry, don’t know how to bold!)

Essays: very last minute. as in, writing them right now. Won’t be perfect, but i’m definitely a decent writer (even in first drafts). maybe i should be…but i have not been focusing on writing about my extracurriculars because i figure they are already in my application. rather, i’m using anecdotes to highlight my character and personality so they can see me as a person rather than a resume.

Letters of Rec: Teachers: great/excellent. Counselors: decent/good.

i’ll chance back!

Umm… yea so I’m writing my essays as well! I might not critique your essays until midnight or so, and send it to you in the morning… sorry~~

And about your language thing. Taking two AP languages is very impressive. In fact, its the only one I’ve seen recently, and I’ve written on tens of chancing topics.

Not taking SAT II’s for extra languages is fine… You are up against native Spanish and French speakers anyways. If you even got to the AP level for a language, much less TWO languages, its indicates your aptitude already. And the vast majority of the people in the US won’t take a foreign language AP until the end of their senior years. Just make sure you have good grades in those classes by the end of this semester… counselors have been known to send scores immediately after the first semester.

And, no, you don’t have to chance back. I’m just posting my stats for the heck of it. I already pretty much analyzed my chances already. Thanks though.

Good luck, and back to my essays.B**

Not familiar with that Georgetown program. I’ll research it and get back to you on that one.

sorry everyone…but I’d love a couple more opinions :]

I’ll chance back

I only improved a little, but I had actually expected to do worse so I’m okay with it.
