<p>Perhaps I phrased it wrongly. If the elite schools offered everything they currently do, minus the prestige that comes with a name like “Harvard”, would they still hold the same appeal? Obviously this is not a possible situation, as most of the elite schools did earn their reputation, but it’s just something to think about. If people did not automatically recognize the name of your school, would you still want to go there? Because there are many excellent schools that may not be “name-brand” in the way the members of the Ivy League are, but may offer a comparable, or, for some programs, an even better education (admittedly, not very many though). </p>
<p>I’m not trying to attack anybody. I just want to know if it’s the name of a college that draws people in, or because they legitimately want to go to that school, regardless of how prestigious it is.</p>
<p>Probably either Harvard or Stanford, maybe even cal state Los Angeles.</p>

<p>@penguin: I guess you could say that the University of Chicago is a school that isn’t very well known but is still a top school. I, personally, would love to go to UChicago. Therefore, if another top school was stripped of it’s prestige, I think I’d still want to go there.</p>

<p>Even so, I’d go to MIT. I love the school, program, campus, people, atmosphere, everything. Cornell’s a tad more practical (most of my family lives an hour away from ithaca) and id still love to go. Prestige is a factor of course. If you got accepted to your top state school and MIT/Harvard, and money wasn’t a factor, you’d go to the top school.</p>
