As someone who has lived in Japan, I highly recommend avoiding Tokyo as much as possible and going to Kyoto, Osaka, and even Hokkaido. You get a much richer "Japanese" experience than you do in the megalopolis of Tokyo.

That said, Tokyo does have a very interesting urban allure. It's just not "Japan."

My four places:

China
France
Northwestern Europe
India

I like post #38.

To UCLAri

Kyoto sounds interesting. Assuming that you're not the type that will be bored visiting a dozen shrines/temples in a week. (I met someone who complained that was the only thing she saw vacationing in Japan.) But what exactly is there to see in the boomdox of Hokkaido?

Hokkaido offers some of the best unspoilt nature in Japan, as well as pretty radically different architectural themes from the rest of Japan. Oh, and the snow/ice festival in winter is spectacular.

About the shrines: Yeah, that can be an issue. After Kinkakuji (the Golden Pavillion), they all start running together. I've seen literally dozens of famous shrines, and despite my pretty good cultural and political historical knowledge of Japan, I can't always tell the pictures apart.

"Was this Ho-ounji or...er...that other one?"

Hawaii - beautiful beaches, volcanoes, history, Pearl Harbor, ect
Taiwan or Japan - my dad's travelling to Asia a lot, and the stuff he talks about sounds awesome
Italy or Greece - I love learning about the Romans, the Greek way of life, and basically the orgins of gov't/democracy. Also, Italy has amazing food, and being near the Med. Sea must be awesome
Spain - although i hated spanish during high school, I think the culture is extremely rich and vibrant. Plus the food and beaches and all the history..phew!

New Trend: Top 4 Places I've been:
1. Montana/Wyoming - visited Glacier Park (if you've ever seen a picture of a mountain with a glacier on it and looks stunning, 90% chance its from here...Google Image it) and was mesmorized. Yellowstone, its bears, gysers, mineral pools, and everything else naturally beautiful was aweing.
2. Niagra Falls - its size makes you and your stupid personal problems seem extremely meager. Quite inspiring, and cool.
3. Dry Tortugas - while this is near Key West (see below), its definently a different place. Its a fort, built during the civil war, for prisoners. Needless to say, it was a crummy place to go during then. Today however, its awesome to walk along the fort walls, go inside the different rooms, and snorkle around the reef that surrounds the fort. Also, if you're lucky, you see a boatful of Cubans land and claim political asylum. I got to see an empty boat, but on the way back to Key West (2 hour boat ride) were saw another empty boat floatin in the sea. It was a nice break because the weather wasn't too nice that day (sunny, hot, but windy and the water was freezing! i about died snorkling) and so the seas were about 6-8 ft seas, and that will get even a 35-ft boat rockin.
4. And the winner: Key West, FL. I have never seen a beach so pretty or a town so cool. One of my best memories is lying on the beach with my mom watching Navy F-18s circle the island while training.

what do u know about the romans and the greeks? please don't pretend to be learned in classics, because nobody except those multi-lingualed scholars do.

sauronvoldemort,

shoebox made no such claims. He merely stated that he enjoys learning about the history. Please do not take an accusatory or otherwise attacking tone in a simple and fun thread-- it's just not necessary.

I've been to most of the places where I want to go, but I want to visit more of...
