Guess son should have applied, I've seen some posts with 15K merit associated with the honors program. Is there any chance of getting any merit aid if you didn't apply to honors? We will not be eligible for need based aid. The acceptance folder is so nice, but the scary last page buried about tuition is a reality check.
I've looked on the website about the honors application, deadline was Jan 10th. Should we call and see if they are still considering late applications?

This is hoping against hope I think.

My S did not apply specifically to the Honors program as has been talked about, but did receive the Presidential Academic Scholarship of $15K per year. His credentials are quite impressive and has received similar scholarships from other Universities. The letter also stated that this would be taken into account when putting together the total FA package. Hopefully, this means that we will have less loans instead of less grants. I still expect to pay the full EFC. I have been told that GW is very good with FA packages, so we are hoping for additional aid to make this decision a bit easier.

Merit aid and the Honors Program are not linked. You can get one and not the other. Every application is reviewed automatically for qualification for merit aid.

So researchmaven, do you think any merit aid would be on the way in the future? We did not receive any notice of merit aid in the acceptance folder, and we are not going to get any need based. Sure would love to accept GW, but ouch on the price!

My D entered the university 2 years ago and she received her merit award notification separate from her acceptance package (about a week later). I'm not sure how they are sending them out this year. Sounds like some people received merit with their acceptances.

And on another thread, someone said some of the honors program packets went out with acceptance letter, and others were being mailed separately.

Nothing like extending the waiting :-)

According to the GW message boards, any merit aid was sent with the admissions packets.

I applied for honors and didnt get in, but I got the 15,000 Presidential Scholarship.

Yup, I also got my Presidential Scholarship with the acceptance letter. A great surprise!! You don't need to have applied for honors to be qualified for it as I did not.

My son was accepted to GWU in 2002. He did not apply to the honor's program as his SATs weren't stellar (he never does well on standardized tests), but his school record was excellent, with AP scores of 4 & 5. Much to our surprise, after he was accepted he got a letter inviting him to apply for Honors! The essay was a killer, and he didn't want to do it since he was in, but for $12,000 per year, we made him try. He was accepted - we never realized you could enter Honors as a freshman without applying initially. By the way, he said his honors courses weren't significantly more challenging than his other courses. Oh...he DID have to live in Mt. Vernon his first year as an honors student - h hated it, but switched sophomore year.
