I was just wondering because I’m deciding if I should go or not. If you don’t go will it hurt your chances getting an appointment?

Seeing as how you're in 8th grade you've got some time to decide whether or not you want to go to SS.

No, not going to SS doesn't hurt your chances. The AFA has the least amount of spots for SS. So it is hard to get into them then the other academies. But if you can go I would highly suggest that you go . Both D's did a SS. One went to AFA and the other USNA's . They enjoyed them both.

Didn't even know it existed until I started applying for USAFA! lol. Didn't hurt at all.

Summer Seminar is worthy but it doesnt have any major affect on your application package. I was rejected to summer seminar and now I am candidate for the class of 2012 and today I recieved two nominations to attend. I was rejected even after my ALO told me I was the best candidate he had ever seen. Sure it sucks getting rejected but after that I had never put so much effort into achieveing something I wanted so bad. In a way it was better that way.

The statistics for SS show that over half of the attendees end up going to the Academy, and having attended SS is a good thing to have on your record when the Academy is looking at you. It won't hurt you to not go, but it will certainly help if you do, and it's a great opportunity. I wouldn't pass it up unless you have a very, very good reason.

Summer Seminar is a good experience, but it doesn't hurt your chances by not going. It doesn't necessarily improve your chances either, it just helps those who go decide if they want to work hard enough to get in. That's it's main purpose, really.

If you decide to go, the cadet in charge of your group evaluates you as a person and that evaluation is sent to the admissions office.

Summer Semminar is a great way to get an idea of what the Academy will be like. If you can go and are offered a slot you wont regret attending. It wont be the deciding factor in your acceptance though.

Plus, for anyone who loves usafa, it's a cool time to be around and talk with cadets face to face and walk through the halls you only see from the outside.

Thank you so much for the advice! I decided I am going to try my best to get into Summer Seminar. If I don't get in, at least I know that I tried. =]

And that's the kind of attitude that will make you succeed at the Academy.

In hindsight, I don't really feel like Summer Seminar was a very accurate portrayal of what the Academy is like as a 4 degree. However, I gained a few very valuable things from attending. First, it sealed my decision to come if I got an appointment. Second, it gave me an enthusiasm and passion for the Academy that I know I couldn't have gained without visiting and seeing what it's like (and believe me, if you're excited about coming, it will pay off in interviews!). Third, when you're being interviewed, it shows that you're really serious about coming to the Academy if you've spent the time and money to visit. And it will come across as if you know more about what you're getting yourself into (which you probably will in some ways ;)). All in all, if you can go, you should!

i got rejected by summer seminar.

i easily recieved an appointment, and now thrive at the top of my class.

so it really has no bearing period

True, but each case is different. Just because it won't guarantee anything either way shouldn't make you not want to go. It can be a good experience, but overall it will probably help you with motivation more than anything.
