If you exceed scholarships 1st year

My son has gotten only $4000 from the college he will be attending. But, he has gotten numerous other outside scholarships and for his first year, he is very close to having full tuition, full room and board paid for.

He will get the $4000 from the college each year, but the outside scholarships are all one year only, (although he might be able to reapply to some of them).

If he gets any more outside scholarships, can he apply them to his second year of college?

Thanks.

you have to read the fine print associated with each scholarship. some scholarships are specifically for the first year of college -- many others can be used anytime during the four years of school with the caveat that the scholarship expires four years after high school graduation.

You just need to read the details regarding the awarding of the scholarship and it should be spelled out pretty well.

also make sure your student checks his school for departmental awards and college scholarships for upper class students.

If he exceeds the Cost of Attendance ask the outside scholarship grantors to hold the funds until next academic year.

Many foundations will allow him to reapply his Soph, Jr. and Sr. years, if his COA has been met the first year. However, not all scholarships will. Daughter is in the same financial situation. Two have asked her to resubmit next year, if she has a need. Third said, sorry...we rescind our award as your need this year has been met."

At Stanford, if a student gets more outside scholarships than the self help (loans/workstudy) category of his financial aid package, the funds from the additional scholarships can be transferred to the next year and cover that self help.. every school has different policies and I suggest u contact your son's financial aid office :)
