If you failed a class in the Fall and retook it in the Winter...

Should you notify the UCs? I didn't pass Precalculus and had to retake it during the Winter. When I sent in my UC update I gave them my Fall grades, but my Winter course was still in progress.

I would imagine this is pretty important...

I would, considering it's a required class

I believe so. I attended the workshops for applying last Fall and that's what I've been told. Also, by my friend's experience (he's now in UCI), he had to notify UCI that he failed Math 52 during the winter and had to retake it in spring, then failed it again in spring and notified UCI but they let him take it in Summer (rare cases, I guess) before he started last Fall. For those who are wondering, his major is African American Studies.

Here's what you do. Don't update your application until after your get into the colleges (or don't get in). There is no deadline to update, but they will see it anyway if/when you send your final transcript to them. I heard the chances of them discarding your chances due to your fall/winter/or spring quarter are not high, but it does happen, and in the case of you getting accepted and you updating your grades stating you failed, there's an even lower chance they will take your acceptance away.

Q: I received a D grade … or...
I am thinking of dropping a class….

A: You should notify us right away and let us know your situation. If you send email or letter, please include a list of all coursework that has has been completed, is in progress, or is planned since you submitted your application and clearly indicate how this list differs from what you had indicated earlier. We will review these changes and let you know how they affect your admission: Changes may mean that you must take additional classes in the summer or, in some cases, your offer of admission may be withdrawn. Generally, the sooner you let us know of changes, the more options you will have.

However, in my opinion, if you think you're a borderline applicant I wouldn't immediately notify the UC's. If, instead, this is your only F, or you have consistent high grades, or at least an upward trend, then this grade alone wouldn't make them change your folder into the Rejected pile.

Sorry I worded this a little weird, what I meant to say was:

I notified the UCs that I failed the class (I took the course during Fall) on my Update in January. I told them I was retaking the course in the Winter. I passed the course when I retook it during the Winter but couldn't notify the UCs since the Update deadline had already passed.

Should I notify them that I passed Precalculus?

how will you notify them? You're going to send them a letter saying you passed Precalculus? All you can do is update your applications.

After I applied to the UCs I got an email from my ccc, informing me to send grade notification to the UC school of choice if I was taking a needed mathmatics course during the winter. They said send a letter complete with the application information, course details, and grade. My suggestion would be to find a way to inform them of the recent update as soon as you can if the course is needed for you major.
