If you get in somewhere better, go there

i got into nyu bu and brandeis and stupidly chose bu because of the university professors program…which turned out to be complete crap, in case any of you are even considering it

i would like to warn all you out there of several things

1) bu is not what you expect
2) bu has no community feel or traditions…AT ALL
3) bu has grade DEFLATION…serious grade deflation…so if you are thinking of grad school or are used to being the best…that wont happen here…the profs are *******s…except the awesome few.
4) bu has stupid attendance policies. if you dont show up more than three times, you are screwed. this is not like a typical college experience…it is ■■■■■■■■
5) seriously…if you get in somewhere better…go there.

if you have a questions or need advice, feel free to email me at shoe7gal87@yahoo.com or just message me

the great thing about the college experience is that everyone has a different view on things

oh don't give me that cheesy crap. you should love your school....not just be okay with it. i just want to help people achieve that

I'm sure Lergnom will have somethin to contribute on this one...

^ I hope so. I can only speak from a outside standpoint (BU 2011) but I don't really see any legitimate points on shoe7gal87's part. Attendance policy? Last I checked, part of the typical college experience was going to class. And lots of schools have grade deflation. If you work hard, you shouldn't worry about it. And I'll live with out the traditions and stuff; that's something you sacrifice when going to school in a school with no real campus.

-The Traditional Coot66

I go to BU and turned down Duke, Hopkins, Rice, and Berkeley. I really like it here. The OP just sounds like she's bitter about not doing well in school.

stop *****ing.

The OP could be:
(1). Some Boston College kids doing a ****ty job pretending to be a BU student. (eg. the poor grammar she uses)
(2). Some loser who does not go to class, fails 3 out of 4 classes, and yet complaining about grade deflation.
(3). Someone who never attend any social events, who just stay sin her room all day long and masturbates.
(4). Some rich, spoiled brat whose parents taught her no manner whatsoever.
(5). Someone whom I will punch her in her face if she ever shows up in front of me.

Or maybe the OP could be all of the above.....who knows, its a crazy world.

I guess everyone has a different view on things. Regarding the first post, I thought BU had a really nice sense of community and most people there felt very proud to be there. There are so many people to interact and become freinds with. I thought this made for a nice sense of companionship and community. As for tradition, all you have to do is go to one hockey game to see pride and tradition at it's best. Never will you see almost 7,000 so proud to be terriers in one place. I agree on the grade deflation. Some profs made it very difficult to get a good grade in the class through that system. I understand that they want grades from BU to actually mean something, but it is screwing over far too many people. The attendance policy, is an issue I somewhat ride the fence on. If students pay for college, they should be under no actual obligation to go to class. It will be only them who will be hurt in the long run. Also, if a student can do well on projects and tests without ever going to lecture, so be it. That student shouldn't be punished for it. But on the other hand, the main reason people go to college is to go to class and learn. So skipping class that often isn't a great decision.
The main point of this and what I'd like to end with is that everyone is going to view things in different ways based on what you expect and what you try and gain from it. If you go in with a bad attitude or have one bad expereince, don't let it get you down or alter your views. I''m sure the OP has a reason to feel the way she does, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that if you get into somewhere better, forget BU. BU is a really great school for many people and I for one wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

The OP is a troll. Disregard this crappy thread and all her comments.

shoe gal- I wil just respond to you in this thread.

no, BU doesn't pay me, I wish they did because that means I'd be accepted. I am a transfer applicant from SDSU.

SDSU has the same bureaucratic problems like you say BU has. You are going to get that nearly anywhere, especially at these large universities, NYU from what Ive been told by my family and friends, as students and professors, has an even bigger disconnect with their students.

These forums are here so that people who really need help can get adivce from current and former students, students in the same transfers/admission process and anyone who wants to share their opinion.

By simply saying it sucks, don't go there, you are not giving any help and you are being counterproductive to this board.

At the 9 schools I am applying to I have gotten solid insight to each school, their strengths and weaknesses.

"bu is not what you expect" ...well everyone has different expectations.

Attendance and grade deflation is common at every university in this country, even me at SDSU.

NYU is in a great city, as is BU. From what I have gathered, NYU student feel like their is a lack of pride and school spirit on their campus, while BU has plenty to go around.

If you choose to keep posting, let people know what you mean when BU sucks. What sucks about it? What is good about BU?

But there is no need to go name calling and being ridiculous.

Well, it's kind of funny that these threads with this person's comments appear just after the deadlines for submitting deposits to schools. They're thus kind of useless and will only make people feel insecure or bad.

I really hope she's put in her applications for transfer because there's no reason to be unhappy at a school. Lots of people at schools all over the country transfer. It's become very common. I don't know why. Maybe kids expect too much from school.

quote. Some rich, spoiled brat whose parents taught her no manner whatsoever."

Pikachusbutt might be on to something; the op was sure to mention that she was from the "OC" in her profile description.

"1) bu is not what you expect"

i agree. it wasn't. it was much better than i expected. when i was applying to colleges two years ago, i knew close to nothing about BU and had little intention in choosing it until i received a good financial aid package. it wasn't until i came here that i found so many reasons for loving my university. i'm so glad everything fell into place, and i can only imagine how much happier some students are whose dream school was BU all along.

"2) bu has no community feel or traditions...AT ALL"

we have no community? that's why so many students came to BU's defense just hours after this thread's original post was made.

we might not have a football team, but our ice hockey team is one of the strongest in the country. go to any hockey game, especially during the annual boston beanpot tournament, and u will sense nothing but pure pride for BU.

one thing i love about the BU community is that u can find absolutely everyone in it. we are a very diverse group, in everything from race, religion, geography, wealth, and sexual orientation. i have a friend who wears $800 shoes and another friend who can't afford a ticket to go back home to africa until his 4 years here are over. i have a roommate who's an exchange student from china and i have classmates from places as different as singapore, iceland, saudi arabia, and brazil. i know several of my friends came out of the closet here and i know that in class discussions, people are very comfortable exhanging their views, no matter what they are. BU is a community that accepts anyone and everyone. if u don't like that, don't come here.

"3) bu has grade DEFLATION....serious grade deflation...so if you are thinking of grad school or are used to being the best...that wont happen here...the profs are *******s...except the awesome few."

some classes are more difficult than others, but it is true that A's are very hard to get at BU. but most grad schools are aware of BU's grade deflation and will take it into account when looking at your transcript.

this is college, not high school. expect to meet lots of people smarter than u. that's part of the challenge and the experience. you'll learn just as much from your classmates as u will from lectures and books. if u wanna be the superstar in college, either work for it or go elsewhere. you're paying for an academic challenge, not for professors to throw A's at u for free.

that said, i'd rather be taught by world-class professors than get easy A's. at BU, u have the opportunity to be taught by elie wiesel, robert pinsky (former poet laureate), leslie epstein (the son and nephew of the screenwriters of Casablanca.. and also the father of the the red sox general manager), howard zinn, numerous pulitzer prize winners, and numerous fulbright scholars.

"4) bu has stupid attendance policies. if you dont show up more than three times, you are screwed. this is not like a typical college experience...it is retarded"

since when were classes not part of a typical college experience?

most classes at BU expect u to show up at most lectures. small classes that meet once a week may expect u to be there every time, but large lectures that meet more often may let u be absent more often before they penalize your grade.

use this to your advantage. at the end of the semester, if your grade is between a B+ and A-, your professor may look at your attendance to decide what he'll give u.

"5) seriously...if you get in somewhere better....go there."

if u seriously care about the US News rankings and u were accepted to somewhere higher ranked than BU, go there to make yourself happy.

otherwise, go to the college that's the best fit for u, whether it's BU or not. BU is not the greatest place for everyone, but i know of a lot more people who are happy here than disappointed here.

Nice post, nathan. One of the good things about BU, I think, is that people there have a clear idea of its strengths and weaknesses. You don't hear a lot of "oh, we're so great" pretension as if everything is perfect. No place is perfect, except maybe in the rear view mirror.

It's nice to read the responses and see that there are plenty of people who have positive things to say about BU.

SHOE7GAL87: I'm with you all the way.
Call Brandeis and NYU and see if they will take the late acceptance. I've seen others do that on this CC post with great results.

Thrilled my son declined BU. Out of all his acceptances, they are the only ones to send one letter. Everyone else sends things constantly providing lots of information. All the other schools want him, BU doesn't care at all.

IF you check out the BU merit scholarship information, my son easily exceeds what is listed for the 1/2 scholarships and was not offered anything at all. (Valedictorian, 4.0 unweighted, 13 AP's, great EC's, etc... Great Long Island High School) I am very glad he decided not to attend (on the bottom of his list anyway and applied only as a safe school as one he expected to get merit aid).

From the way BU presents itself I would not recommend anyone apply. There are better options (not to say you can't get a good education there or be happy but you can get those and more elsewhere).

Crazed, don't write mindless posts. Don't badmouth a school because they didn't send brochures. I got several pamphlets from them; I doubt they do it by who they want to come. Maybe there were some mailing errors; BU has thousands of applicants, it's very possible there was some trouble with your son's information. And don't complain about scholarships: there were probably more qualified applicants.

-The Qualified Coot66

The post before me is right. There were probably more qualified applicants to whom the money went. Tons of valedictorians and 4.0's apply to BU each year. Nothing out of the ordinary. And if the amount of info paper a school sends you has any weight in your decision, you need to think about straightning those priorities of yours.

coot66 and Devilsrule:

Try and see the whole picture and not your shortsided BU is great because I go there attitude.
I called BU. Admissions wouldn't even look at his application folder. They don't seem to care at all. I'm well aware there are many great applicants and many with less credentials that were awarded scholarships as you can find on many posts. My point is - Why put the information on the BU website if it means nothing? If you choose to attend, fine. I am glad NOT TO PAY $40,000+ to go to this school when there are many others my son/I prefer that will gladly take our money and treat him well.

If Shoe7Gal87 doesn't want to attend and I agree with her, why do you care?
