can you still get admitted to nyu in general and come in as an undeclared major?

No. You only get one shot, and if you’re rejected from any of the NYU schools, you’re flat-out rejected.

It’s a horrible system! My D bleeds NYU. She had to give up the option of auditioninng to Tisch or Steinhardt because she knew the odds of being accepted were so small…and decided to apply for CAS because she wanted the school that badly. In POLAR OPPOSITE majors. She was going to minor at CAS if accepted. But just couldn’t risk it. Some might say that she then didn’t want a music major that badly, and should have gone for it and taken a 2nd school as her music safety. But…NYU is “it” for her.

Our state U allows one to apply, and be accepted for general studies wtihout declaring a major (most do). THEN, you can opt to audition for MT or Music. If not admitted, you still have your acceptance at the school.

I see how the various schools at NYU would then be competing against each other for students, but…where’s the harm in that? My D is a National Merit Semifinalist. I’d think that, if she didn’t have the music chops, CAS or Stern would still want her. It was very disheartening to learn of this, but…it obviously works pretty well for them or they wouldn’t do it.

At Oxford, you can only apply for one major. Much more harsh.

Good luck to ya!!!

yeah i agree that you should be able to at least apply to two schools in nyu or something. it’s like usc–you can apply to the film school but if you’re not accepted into your major, if you’re a good applicant, you will still be accepted as an undeclared major. too bad it’s not like that with nyu! cuz if i don’t get into tisch, i’d still consider gallatin or cas as an option.

I agree, it’s so frustrating! I’m auditioning at Tisch but it was a really tough choice because like you guys, I want NYU so badly that I’d consider not majoring in theatre to go there. I have good grades but to be honest they would probably be borderline for NYU, so I figured it would be a better bet for me to try for Tisch instead of CAS, despite the low acceptance rate.
