If you go to Stanford GSB, how do you end up in NYC?

I've read that most Stanford GSB grads end up working in Silicon Valley or somewhere in Cali. Is there a way to find out where most stanford grads end up working? Basically West Coast?

Many do because they can’t stand to leave CA, but Stanford is fully recruited for jobs everywhere.

36 out of 263 reporting took a job in the northeast, 143 stayed in the west.

Not very good representation in NY. That being said, coming out of Stanford GSB the brand is such that you can really get a job anywhere.

It’s somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you want to work in NYC, Stanford is probably not going to the be the highest school on your list. If you can get into Stanford, you can probably get into other programs that will give you more NYC opportunities.

I’d have to agree…

I totally disagree. I’m surprised by the numbers compared to when my husband graduated 25 years ago and many headed for NYC, but Stanford MBA’s have the same access to top jobs anywhere that Harvard or Wharton students do.

The numbers are speaking to lifestyle choice probably more than anything. Kid go out there and see what a good life can be had.

To answer the OP’s Q above: you apply/interview and then relocate to NYC. It’s really much more simple than you would imagine. To think that because Stanford is in CA you have to stay in CA or the West Coast is certainly a fallacy. (Most Stanford grads who end up in CA stay in CA by choice, not limitation.)

I agree with hmom5. In fact, I’ll add that going to Stanford GSB might even be an advantage if you want to end up in NYC or in investment banking, as most GSB seem to be either save the world types or tech/entrepreneurs/aspiring VCs. Come recruiting time, you’ll face much less competition securing interviews on campus, etc.
