If you got into Emerson...

What were your GPA and SAT scores, and how important do you think they were for your acceptance? Just trying to figure out the range of SAT scores and GPAs that they accept. My son has good experience and EC's but his GPA will probably be right around a 3.0 when he applies, and not sure what his SAT will be yet. Emerson is his #1 choice by far. He is also attending their Young Filmmakers' Program this summer. Does that have any bearing on admission when he applies EA in the fall?

hey jsmom1,

here are my stats:

GPA: 3.8 (unweighted), 4.45 (weighted)
class ranking: top 2%
SAT: didn’t sumbit this score
SAT II Biology-Ecology: 710
SAT II U.S. History: 650
SAT II Literature: 680
ACT: 27

ECs: school newspaper, model u.n., california scholarship federation, key club, nhs, cooking club, museum volunteer work, volunteer for the american cancer society, link crew leader, and i’ve held a few leadership positions for these ECs.

i’m not sure if my test scores played a huge role in my acceptance. i only submitted the ACT and didn’t even take the SAT. the only really exceptionally “wow” score i got from my standardized tests was in biology, which isn’t even the main focus at emerson.

i think the things that really made my acceptance were my GPA, the classes i took, my EC, and my recommendations. i applied for journalism, so i am involved in my school newspaper and i submitted recommendations from my journalism advisor, as well as another teacher i have had for three years (he knows me well and was able to comment on how i progressed through high school).

i hope this (somewhat) helps and best of luck to your son!

I know you asked for people who got in, but from the other end I was rejected (applied EA, deferred then rejected).

My stats
GPA: 3.55 unweighted, my school doesn’t weight but I tried calculating my own GPA based on another school’s weighting system and I would have had around a 3.8-3.9 weighted (11 honors, 5 APs)
ACT: 27
ECs: Editor-in-Chief of school newspaper, two years as page editor for the yearbook, three years in the GSA. Took two years of film class in HS and was in two local film festivals (well, the same one, two different years).

I’m pretty confident my GPA killed me, I guess I don’t know for certain but I felt that my essays and other submissions were pretty strong, my ACT certainly didn’t help either.

I assume from your post that your son is looking to get into their filmmaking department which is also what I applied for, a word to the wise, it is extremely competitive, perhaps if his video submission is really strong they would overlook his GPA.

Anyway, Good Luck!

My son was accepted last year into film production…ACT was a 31, gpa 3.8 weighted…the screenplay he submitted was pretty good and he had lots of EC’s…he chose to go to a college on the west coast tho because Emerson was just a bit too urban for him and he felt lacked a true campus feel…

GPA: 3.25 (Hardest schedule possible - 8 AP’s when I graduate, with only 2 none honors classes)
SAT: 1920
SAT 2 Math 1: 720
SAT 2 US History: 670
ACT: 29 composite 34 English 31 Math 30 Reading 23 Science
ECs: 130 community service hours, Every possible music EC (Jazz, Marching, Symphonic Band), Varsity baseball, 2 summers of working full time, others.

Applied as a Sound Design Major, was accepted EA. Also received a 14k merit scholarship which came as a surprise. What helped me was my strength of schedule, which helped to make my GPA less disgusting, my ACT and the fact that Emerson really does not care about science scores, and my clear passion for music which was shown in my EC’s and my essay.

Only go to Emerson if you know what you want to do. If not you will be alone while everyone else is out working.

Naviance data from our high school (in a suburb of Boston) show median GPA (unweighted, core courses only) for acceptance of 3.265 and median SAT of 1310/1600.

(This is based on applications for the classes of 2004-2008.)

Keep in mind that the stats fendrock noted include all Emerson majors. The film program is VERY competitive at Emerson.
Based on my son’s experience and contact with Emerson’s admission department, anything less than a 3.60 GPA has little to zero chance of getting accepted. He has a 3.42 unweighted which include 9 honors and 4 AP classes. He also had an impressive hook as well as years of film experience.
After he received his rejection letter he contact Emerson and was told that although they felt he was a great fit for the college, given the pool of film applicants , they could not overlook his GPA.
My advice when considering any colleges film program, is to ask what the film program acceptance stats are. They can be vastly different than the overall college acceptance stats.

Good luck to your son.
