Apparently the UK government has just introduced a new work visa program targeting graduates (undergraduate and post-graduate) of “elite” universities globally (“High Potential Individuals”) .

It’d be interesting to see the uptake - to me, it’s a bit gimmicky. And contrary to the view of many on CC, I guess where you go to school matters - at least to the UK government!
Yes, it is interesting….in France it is still more impressive to first go to a prépa and then go to a Grande Ecole( or maybe SciencesPo). These schools are not “Universities” so they never make these ranking lists. If you want to work internationally, I guess it is okay to go to the US for school, but if you want to stay in France, you are better off in the traditional path?
France is trying to start new routes, to prime jobs, through integrated prépas and university courses. My D has a course down on her list, which leads to a masters in Engineering in 5 years, and it is under a thousand a year! (Excluding room and board). France is short on engineers, apparently. There is mention of it being an “honors course, “ which makes me think that they are trying to emulate the honors programs at US state schools.
As far as name recognition of US schools in the general population of France, Harvard, MIT, and Californian schools are generally known and anything else needs to be explained.
Getting Back to the UK: it seems Brexit has had a bit of a brain drain effect. As predicted.
It looks like the list is based on being ranked among the top 50 colleges in 2 or more of the following lists:
Times Higher Education World University Rankings
Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings
The Academic Ranking of World Universities
These rankings differ from USNWR type rankings and generally place a greater emphasis on research, grad programs, and global reputations. For example, no graduates from LACs are “high potential individuals”, nor are graduates from certain Ivy+ type colleges, such as Brown and Dartmouth. However, grads from NYU, UCSD, or Washington qualify as “high potential individuals.”
It’s not surprising that the methodology is lacking….some lazy work was done by the current government minister of immigration”s office….or work and pensions? They are just politicians, so what do they know?
All of these universities have substantial global brands and reputations for top-notch research output. Brown, Dartmouth, and the other LACs do not, and so they are all but unknown outside the US. My guess is outside the US, there is a premium put on excellence in research rather than on teaching.
“From 30 May 2022, you can apply for the HPI route if you have graduated from an eligible international university in the 5 years immediately before your application.”
The website has the list of schools used since 2016 ( small changes yearly). So is the intent that you match the year of your graduation to the relevant list?
Because they make popping and sizzling noises when they are cooked, if I recall. Bangers traditionally are served as an evening meal with mashed potatoes (bangers and mash) and chipolatas are more like the Farmer John style sausage eaten for breakfast in the US.
With the omission of Mount Allison, which has produced more Rhodes Scholars per capita than any other university in Canada, this list fails even in its general anglocentrism.
