If you guys have a minute, please chance me for CAS! :)

Hey all! This is my first 'chance me' post, so my apologies if I make any mistakes.

Asian male

Interested in a computer science major at CAS (regular decision)

3.87 weighted GPA (I don't know my unweighted GPA; I don't think our school tells us)
School does not rank

I come from a pretty competitive public high school in New Jersey that sends around 10-20 people to Ivies and top tier colleges each year

SAT I: 2340 single sitting (760 CR, 780 Math, 800 Writing, 11 essay); super scored would be the same except the 11 would be a 12 essay
SAT II: I took Biology and Math 1, but my scores were meh. I will take Biology and Math 2 and I’m hoping for a 750+ in both.

I have taken all honors classes since freshman year

AP classes taken:
AP English I, AP Biology, AP US History (Junior year)
AP English II, AP Physics C, AP Macroeconomics, AP Calculus AB (Senior year)
Our school does not let us take AP classes until junior year

Mu Alpha Theta (11th, 12th)
Model Congress (9th, 10th) Outstanding Large Delegation Award for both years at Rutgers Model Congress
Model United Nations (11th) Outstanding Large Delegation Award at Rutgers Model United Nations, Resolution of Commendation at Philadelphia Model United Nations
Cross Country JV (11th) 2010 Red Division Champions for our county
I had a job at a laser company reviewing and editing company records and documents to make sure everything was in order, no information was missing, etc. for audits for the summer of ’11
64 hours of volunteer service at a local Chinese school helping teachers and students

AP Scholar Award
Honor Roll since freshman year
Commended for the PSAT by National Merit Scholarship Corporation

Recommendations: Good
Essays: I think my Common App essay and short answer were written pretty well, but I’m still working on Cornell’s supplemental essay. I was thinking about writing about my interest in computer science and how Cornell’s excellent educational opportunities in computer science can help me, as the supplemental question basically asks you, “Why did you choose your major and why did you choose Cornell?”
Hooks: None

Thank you very much for reading and good luck to all who are applying!

Bump! Anyone?

I’ve actually decided to ED Cornell. Chances anyone? I’ll chance back if you give me a link.

Current undergrad here, you have great scores and gpa. You should really think about the engineering department and do computer science there, in reality, a degree in either CAS or ENG for CS is the same(same classes, reqs) but engineering just makes you look that much more badass

You have about an average shot at Cornell. Nothing extracurricular and awards wise really stands out, so I say it’s about 50-50.

dude hes pretty golden, I got in with literally the most ******** Extracurrics, 2 years of JV tennis, stuco, NHS(did nothing), some science and math UIL **** and 1 year orchestra, national merit finalist probably helped my ass out a lot

Thank you very much for the replies guys.
@bobfrink: Thanks! I was thinking about applying to the school of engineering but if I ever wanted to change my major, I’d have a larger variety of choices at CAS. Though I agree with the notion that engineering does make you look pretty badass haha. I also have some questions if you don’t mind me asking: How do you like it right now at Cornell? What’s the overall atmosphere of the school and the student body? Has your overall experience at Cornell been awesome so far?
@cortana431: Thank you for the chance! It is much appreciated. If you have a chance thread, I’d be happy to chance you back.

EDIT: Just saw your last post, thank you again for the encouragement bobfrink!

Cornell CAS alum here.

I think you stand a very good chance, but just make sure to write a very compelling application essay. Applying ED would give you a lot of boost as opposed to RD. With ED, I think you will get in.

I’ve seen kids with near perfect scores get rejected some times, and I think it is because of their lack-luster essays or extra curriculars.

In my experience, Cornell was awesome. There are a lot of fun kids to hang out with and the campus is absolutely gorgeous. I am a recent alum, and I start missing my time at Cornell already. You will enjoy your experience there, I have no doubt, and best of luck with your application!

Thank you very much for the insight LazyKid! That was very informative. Hypothetically speaking, how much of a lower chance would I have of being accepted if I did regular decision and not ED?

Going of only the SAT, i’d say you have a great shot. EC’s wise you aren’t the most outstanding. Overall i’d say it all depends on the essays.

I don’t exactly know the answer to this question. I think ED admit rate is around 30-35%, but RD admit rate is around 10%. So, it definitely is much harder to get in RD than ED, all else equal.
