My school doesn't rank, so I'd like them to give them a better idea of my rank. Are there any negatives to mentioning it?

Would I need to fax in proof of it?

I’d be afraid that your schools would think you’re going to pick your ELC UC over them.

Are you just doing this to show rank?

Do you go to a private school?

Yes to the first question. I attend a magnet public school.

I think colleges are used to getting apps from students from private schools, Catholic schools, and magnet schools who refuse to rank because it hurts their “smart” kids who might be in the 2nd or 3rd decile or so.

Where did you apply to?

Would I call them? No. What I would have done is list it in the ‘Other’ section of the app, assuming the GC didn’t reference it in his/her rec.

Thanks for being on this thread, mom2!

The privates: Cornell, Oberlin, Brown, Dartmouth, Vassar, Haverford, Wesleyan, Tufts, Middlebury, Amherst. I also applied to a couple of UCs (UCSB, guaranteed; UCSD, UCB, UCLA).

Seeing as ELC status is conferred on students even before they apply to UCs, though, how could the private schools assume the UCs are my top choices? I’m guessing a mere mention of other colleges could raise flags for some schools.

Well, I think that your elites are used to seeing apps from students whose schools don’t rank.

BTW…since your school doesn’t rank, how does it determine who has ELC status? Isn’t that the top 4% (don’t remember the exact).

I think Blue is right that the time to have indicated it would have been during the app time.

Is there anything on the counselor report that indicates/suggests your decile?

Are your scores and GPA very high? Would your counselor check the box of most challenging curriculum? if so, that would suggest high ranking right there, wouldn’t it?

I’d assume the rankings are worked out by my school, but aren’t released to colleges. Students don’t know their ranks, either.

My GPA isn’t terribly high for the schools I’m applying to (3.81 UW, 4.47 W). Can GCs write notes in the midyear report, or is it simply a reporting of first semester senior grades? I do wish I’d noted it on the Common App, but maybe I’ll ask my counselor to make a note of it, if he can.

Some counselors can write, “our school does not rank, but if we did, Keil would be in the top 5%…”

There’s the solution! Thanks.
