If you had to major in something else what would it be?

Like the title says, if you had to major in a different subject what would it be? This applies to past, present, and future Engineers/Scientist. I've noticed the majority of the discussions on CC are about advice and gudicance. I fiqured a thread like this would help the community get to know each other better :).

I'll start off. I'm a senior Electrical Engineering major, but if I had to choose something else it would probably be Aerospace Engineering. Why? As long as I can remember, I've always been fascinated with space and aircraft. Some of my foundest memories are going to the US Space and Rocket center (in Huntsville, Alabama) and marveling at the spacecraft. The same can be said about regular aircraft. I mean, the mere fact that we obtain enough lift to fly is incredible (especially for someone who doesn't have much background in fluid mechanics, such as myself).

What major would you choose and why?

*Note: The the major you choose does not have to be STEM related..

I don’t know, as I really enjoy what I do, but I suppose I would probably have to say either astrophysics or cryptography. Maybe applied mathematics.

Hi @boneh3ad, thanks for the reply! Astrophysics eh? Very interesting! What do you do now (if you don’t mind me asking)?

Piano performance. :slight_smile: That is, assuming I could play so well that I could have a career as a soloist. I didn’t think I was capable of that, so I chose engineering.

MechEng gave me a good base in general problem solving. No regrets here, even though my job never used much of my specific coursework knowledge. It has benefited from my tech communications classes (audience analysis!).

These days I would probably be interested in adding some Analytics coursework. Now that I work with more business coworkers, I realize that I am a data geek.

@jcjones42‌ I do aerodynamics research.

Nuclear Physics or engineering probably… I’ve always been fascinated with the Manhattan Project and Los Alamos NL.

But I love what I do now, and where I live so I’m happy.

@fractalmstr‌ It’s funny you mention the Manhattan Project! I actually live pretty close to Oak Ridge. I had two physics professors who had P.H.D’s in Nuclear Physics and worked at Y-12 part time.

Probably be a lawyer so I can sue the living pants at anybody that I don’t like, and yes for free.

@DrGoogle Interesting answer! At least you’re honest.

Well, lawyers always demand up front $5-10K before they are start working on your case. Results are not guaranteed.

Accounting. Currently a senior in EE.
