Would it be possible to both study abroad to another country and intern at the Oxy at the UN program?

atiekay - Yes, it definitely is possible. The last time I checked, about a third of UN program participants study abroad in their junior year.

I applied as a transfer student for fall of 2012. I know we all received an email saying that they were still collecting/sorting out paperwork but that was on March 19th! Does anyone know around when they’ll be done sorting or what’s going on? I’m just curious as to what month even they will be sending out transfer decisions.

Despite being a small college, will Oxy prepare me well in Diplomacy and World Affairs?

I’m somewhat hesitant to enroll because I’m not sure if I would be competitive in the job market against students with degrees from larger universities?

strycks - The office has recently caught up with all the credentials flowing into the office. Therefore we are now able to provide application updates to applicants if they email us. The office will soon be contacting all students with updates about their application, and students will be able to complete their file at that time, without penalty. Admission decisions will be sent out on a rolling basis for transfer students.

schismar - Occidental’s Diplomacy and World Affairs department offers a degree that will definitely get you far in the field. Former students have gone on to work for the Department of State, the United Nations, the Peace Corps, various non-profit organizations, and more. For more information about the department and Occidental’s famous United Nations Undergraduate Internship Program, please visit the following website: [Diplomacy & World Affairs | Discipline with Attitude](http://college.oxy.edu/dwa/)

Thanks so much for your response! Greatly appreciated.

Hi my son was recently accepted to Oxy. He plans to major in something humanities related but must make the decision between Oxy and his state school University of Maryland. Financially, we would to pay $40k for Oxy and $15k for UMD. Do you think Oxy’s opportunities are worth this amount over UMD?

CollegeHowWhy - I do love my experience here at Occidental, but I do not know enough about UMD to provide you with an informed opinion, especially on such a personal and important decision. I wish you the best of luck with the decision-making process, and feel free to contact the office of admission with any questions or concerns.

CollegeHowWhy - One year ago our D was making pretty much the same decision – she had narrowed it down to UMD or Oxy. UMD was much less expensive and had one aspect of appeal that was the same as Oxy, in that it had a defined campus but was near a big city. However, she ended up deciding on Oxy, and I am happy that she did. I can’t say I never think wistfully of the money we would have saved if she had gone to UMD, but that way lies madness : ) On the whole, though, I think it was a good decision.

As a parent, I really appreciate the small classes and individual attention she gets. My S is graduating from UMass Amherst this year, and while overall he’s had a good experience there, he certainly had his share of huge auditorium classes with TA’s. He’s in a small program (pre-architecture) so he did have smaller classes in his major, but the general classes were very large and anonymous.

I like the fact that when I call Oxy with any question, they always look our D up by name, not number, and are much friendlier and more responsive. I somehow had the sense that our son was on his own at UMass, while Oxy seems to provide more support.

But so much depends on what you and your son are looking for. Feel free to message me if you have more questions. Good luck!

Hello, OxyIntern!

I am an international student from Latvia, and have been accepted to Oxy. I’ve had a hard time to make my decision about my studies. As I am from Eastern Europe, I didn’t get to visit college/university campuses, so I haven’t got any idea how Oxy or any other uni in US is. My choice is between Occidental college and UMiami. I know these are very different schools, but I too have very different sides of me- one that wants greater academics and a smaller community, and the other that wants to meet new people and enjoy social life. I would appreciate if you could answer some of my questions, like, doesn’t the school sometimes feel too small and you feel like there is too much intimacy? And, how is it to live in LA? Do Oxy students often go to the city? And, do you meet lots of new people or is it pretty much that you see the same faces everyday? And how about the party/social scene, do people drink and party, or do they go to LA to do that? And could you describe the student body how you see it generally? Thanks so much in advance!!

OxyIntern: Do you know if an accepted student can defer until January term? I know a deferral for a year is possible, but cannot find any info on whether on a semester deferral. BTW, daughter is reluctant to call and ask Admissions office about this because every time we call with a question, they (nicely) ask her name and pull her file. Makes her nervous asking about deferral.

Thank you BefuddledParent (also OxyIntern) so much for your messages regarding my post. Over the weekend we traveled to Wake Forest which accepted my S as well and is closer for us to go to see. We consider Wake also a liberal arts college although it’s double the size of Oxy in undergraduates. Its programs are very impressive, too. We don’t have decision made yet, but time is running short. Thank you all again.

Am I able to skip freshman English if I got a 5 on my AP Language and Composition test?
And if I am able to, how much money would that save?

annemarijaa - Based on my time at Occidental thus far, I think that the college is small enough to where I experience a tight-knit community and see most of my friends everyday, but also big enough to where I meet new people all the time. I enjoy living in Los Angeles because of the warm weather and the abundance of opportunities to get involved in the city and pursue my work and volunteer interests. The social scene at Oxy provides something for everyone, whether you really enjoy partying with friends or hanging out with smaller groups of people. Oxy offers dances, concerts, and other social events throughout the year for students. To gain a more holistic perspective on life here at Occidental, I encourage you to view Occidental College’s Admission blog to read blog posts by other current students about their life as an Oxy student. The blog can be found at the following webpage: https://college.oxy.edu/admissionblog/

pidseattle - I will get back to you as soon as I can with this information, thank you for your patience.

CollegeHowWhy - Wonderful, I am happy that the comments help! Please feel free to ask any further questions.

ep2012 - AP scores will not waive the first-year writing class requirements. All first-years must participate, but the classes really do help! My writing improved significantly after taking those courses, and they all have different themes so that students can take what they are interested in! For instance, my first semester class was titled “Criminal Dreams: Sigmund Freud Meets Sherlock Holmes.” It was fascinating to say the least.

pidseattle - Students are typically not allowed to defer for one semester, as we prefer first-years to begin their tenure at the beginning of a school year.
For more information regarding deferrals, please visit the following webpage: [Occidental College :: Deferring Enrollment](http://www.oxy.edu/x1968.xml).

If your daughter is absolutely certain that she wants to defer for only a semester, we recommend that she call the admission office and ask to speak with an admission counselor. She will not be penalized in any way for doing so, the admission staff members are very happy to provide support for prospective students!

Thank you!

is this program as rigorous as a normal engineering program? i was initially going to major in economics and minor in a science, but upon hearing this program i felt it was better suited for me. is it a good idea for me to follow this program-- even if i want to have a heavier emphasis on economics?

Hi mankeh, what program are you referring to? Once I know I can provide you with helpful resources!

oops sorry! i copied and pasted it from another thread… i’m referring to the 3-2 program oxy has with caltech/columbia

Do you know when transfer students are going to hear about their admission decision??
