idk about honors but I remember in the letter it said a small number will get in from December till February. Everyone else will hear back in March or April.
So if you haven't heard back yet, you're probably just not one of the top applicants. It doesn't mean you didn't get in though.

Here's what I've heard. Trust me, I'm in the same boat as you.

One a few batches of applications have been sent out. The majority of decisions comes in March. In my understanding, only the top students have received letters so far. There are five rankings they give you after reviewing your application: deny; marginal; admissible; strong; or highest recommendation. I think only 'highest recommendation' students have gotten in. There's a good chance that if you fall into the two categories below that, you'll still have a mighty shot at getting in.

I've said this before--several times, but will say it again....
I've had three kids go through this process at UW. I've read CC comments throughout all three of those years. I think the only fact that is reliable is that there are some outstanding kids that get into UW early (seems to be especially true for OOS--my unscientific observation). After that initial period of admits (Dec.), everyone goes nuts and becomes paranoid trying to figure out how the internet status page works. No one ever figures it out, and the VAST majority of qualified applicants get their notice in late March. Don't panic. I think the UW would be better off without that darn status page.....plan on waiting until the END of March. And good luck!

It's not random, but you can't read the applications. You are probably thinking of top applicants as those with the highest test scores and GPA. UW also considers applicants tops in "personal qualities." This is not measured by GPA and test scores.
Read about it here:

I would dispute the statement that the early admissions are geared towards the "outstanding" kids.

D got accepted in December, OOS. She is a very good student, but not "outstanding", at least not by what I would think are some common yardsticks. No particular lasting passions/interests, like most teens would rather hang out than study. From the little she cares to share with us, and from the few discussions I have had with her teachers, I would guess that they consider her "solid". When asked about her recommendations, her counselor described them as "positive", which for me is adult-speak for "generic". I think that her stats accurately reflect her academic status: ACT=34, SAT~2230 (super-scored), GPA=3.8 UW/3.9 W, Rank=12% UW/7%W. The discrepancy between top percentile achievement on standardized scores and relatively modest in-school ranking probably says it best - bright, intelligent, but not particularly inclined towards sustained hard work, at least not at this point in her life.

Don't get me wrong, I am not bashing my own D, I love her to death the way she is, and would not have it any other way. However, unlike some other parents, I try to be as objective as I can. I still don't know why she was accepted early at UW, but we sure are glad that she did, given the not-so-positive outcomes from a couple of EA places she applied to.

Groovygeek--your modesty and efforts to be objective are appreciated. However, I think your D's rank and ACT score DO put her into that potential "early admit" pile for the UW. Congrats.

I've seen many many schools over the years. IMO, UW still ranks right near the top for all-around great experience.

My status FINALLY changed today and I applied on December 1st, and had my status @ "We have received all materials required to review your application. Your application will remain in this status until decisions are finalized. We will inform you by postal mail when a decision is made" since December 19th. until today!

My son's status just changed and the unofficial transcript magically appeared on 2/27, which is exactly 3 months from when he applied on 11/27. Before this, no status change since 12/20. He's in-state. Finally!!! It sounds like there's been a burst of activity in Admissions. Congratulations, guys, and don't forget to post on the admitted students thread when the letter arrives.

Rainmama, when I first read your post, I was very skeptical, but since your son's, magicalchris's, and serpentine's all changed, I decided to give it a look, and the good Lord bestowed a fine gift when I peeked. :)

my son is still waiting...grrrr....application status hasn't changed since 11/27/07 in over 4 months....application is still awaiting review. Lots of schools across the country can get ALL their decisions out by April 1...you'd think UW could do the same. Yes, UW has a lot of applications but schools like Berkley and Stanford have already notified 25,000+ applicants...
