CMC is significantly less liberal than Oxy; this is evident just from looking at general education requirements. I also think Williams-Pomona and Midd-Richmond are a little suspect. Pomona is unique in being an extremely well-rounded school in all respects–including location and alcohol tendencies, two things that distinguish Williams from its peer LACs. Richmond is much more “Southern” than Midd.

"Northwestern is just as hard to get into as Cornell, but Penn and Columbia are more selective. " Cornell is nearly as selective as UPenn these days, Cornell acceptance rate is 19% and I believe UPenn’s is 17% or 18% (Northwestern is somewhere around 20% I believe). Columbia is much more selective than the 3

Having been to both UMN & NW many times, I definitely agree with the comparison.

acceptance rate is not in direct correlation with the selectivity of a school. you’d need another way to prove this statement. anecdotally, penn and columbia are equally selective, both more selective than cornell/northwestern (albeit, by a small margin).

how do you prove something anecdotally? Collect anecdotes? ;)

well in US News only 15% of selectivity comes down to admit rate. the rest depends on the caliber of the incoming students.

"how do you prove something anecdotally? Collect anecdotes? "

You get an anecdote from each person in a random sample, then…

Well, anecdotally I know someone accepted by Brown and rejected by Northwestern.

While CMC is more moderate than Oxy, both schools have many students who are interested in politics.

Richmond may be more “Southern,” but its students are highly interested in IR just as at Middlebury. They both also have some of the best study abroad programs in the world.

Having lived my whole life about five minutes from the U of Minnesota, and having worked there throughout high school, and having just visited Northwestern a few weeks ago, I have to say that the two are surprisingly VERY similar. The feel is much different then that of Wisconsin/Michigan.

UMN/NWU are both very close to major cities and overlook the downtown skyline (more so with UMN) and although are urban, are still removed from the city and have very well defined campuses.
UW/UM on the other hand are the centerpieces of smaller cities, and are much more intertwined into the actual city, and have less defined campuses, and are much more spread out.
UMN/NWU have big time sports, but the school spirit is much more restrained than in Madison or Ann Arbor.
All four are quite pre-proffesionally orienentated, although Madison and Ann Arbor feel much more liberal while UMN/NWU have a much more pre-proffesional atmosphere.
Minnesota and Northwestern are just small aspects of a much larger community, while Michigan and Wisconsin, to a certain extent, IS the community.

That is just my observation.

Pardon the spelling, that isn’t my strong point.

Cornell - Stanford

I think Stanford was modeled after Cornell when it was founded.

That’s right, except it isn’t really a game. Hopefully, this might help some people in constructing a list of schools that makes sense. I also wish I had made the title say Ivy (or other selective school).

Wesleyan - Occidental

Similar urban/suburban slant to their neighborhood; diverse student body; they even share an Obama tie.

What ties does Obama have with Wesleyan?

Obama gave the Commencement speech to the Class of `08 last year. It made a bit of a splash:
