If you loved Rice.....what other colleges might be of interest?

How about Furman?

[Furman: Engaged Learning at a Leading Liberal Arts University](<a href=“Furman University | Top Private Liberal Arts University in Greenville, SC”>Furman University | Top Private Liberal Arts University in Greenville, SC)<a href=“Furman University | Top Private Liberal Arts University in Greenville, SC”>Furman University | Top Private Liberal Arts University in Greenville, SC;

So you’re picturing football players, and I’m picturing the NCAA DI Basketball Champions/Undefeated in 2011-12 Lady Bears!

Washington & Lee is pretty popular here among the bright conservative folks, but I’m not saying that it can compare to Rice.

Does Rhodes have a music program?

What about Case Western in Cleveland. Similar in size, has a collaboration with Cleveland Institute of Music, it is surrounded by museums, botanical gardens etc… They have strong engineering and technical programs. I can’t speak to the fraternities so that would be something to check into, however, it does seem to be something they emphasize.

You have to remember, Rice is a D1 school and does have an athletic scene, including a strong baseball team. This may or may not matter to you, but you aren’t going to get that at Rhodes or Sewanee. It might not matter. Rice is also in a large city and there is a lot to do. That makes it a very different environment from Lawrence or Sewanee.

Consider some of the schools that have partnerships with conservatories where students can take classes. Two in that category that are the same size as Rice are Tufts (NE Conservatory of Music) and JHU (Peabody). Neither are big frat schools. Both are in urban settings, but have a campus. Tufts tends to be rather liberal - global citizenry and all that. Hopkins may be a bit more conservative. UChicago is another option - they have a strong music program and access to other resources in Chicago. Be warned - none of these are easy admits. Northwestern is also great, but it is bigger and has a big frat scene.

Other than Music what is she interested in studying? If she is interested in engineering then the LAC’s aren’t going to work.

Another vote for Vandy!! Beautiful campus, great programs, in a great city…

Kat

She actually plans to major in, likely, Asian studies and French…but would love the chance to double with music. Access to music opportunities is good enough though for the most part.

Do you realize that she won’t be able to double major in music at Rice? She would have to be admitted to Shepherd as a BM student. There is no direct entry to a BA in music. Some BM students can switch to a BA at a later date, and rarely students may do a double major including a BM if the music teacher approves.
