If you or your kid were a National Merit Finalist

how did y’all do in college and work life?

I got my master’s degree in engineering, married a classmate, and eventually started a company with him. It’s just the two of us and we’ve made it 23 years in business so far. And we stayed married, ha, our biggest accomplishment.

My NMF kid is a attending a college at which it didn’t matter (since her admission process wan’t standard, and there are no NMF scholarships at her college), where she’s doing amazingly well. She should be graduating this coming spring, and likely off to grad school.

LH went to Harvard graduated in 3 years to save his parent’s money and got a full scholarship to UNC Medical School (turned down 2 Ivy Med schools - I did not find that out until his funeral). Against the advice of his mentors, he choose to become an internist, was loved by his patients and saved many lives and had somewhat of a work/life balance, we were married for 27 years and had 4 sons.

Our oldest son (27) struggled a bit in college (started as a better test than student but matured into good student), graduated EE/CE from Northeastern. Lives in the Boston area and enjoys his job as a firmware engineer.

Our 4th son is a current senior and will be a NMF.

I had a full-tuition scholarship to the school my parents wanted me to attend and graduated magna cum laude, though in hindsight I wonder whether another school might have been a better fit socially. I stayed for an MA and then went to a T10 law school, after which I spent 12 yrs in private practice before moving in-house. There were some wrong turns along the way, but I think things turned out pretty well.

My 2021 Undergrad was a finalist in 2018 and we turned down the NMSF aid as he did not like the snow in that state(University of Rochester, he is a California kid) , went to in-state UC to complete his undergrad and this fall started a PhD at Brown.

In the mid 1990s, I don’t know how much of my scholarship to a small Midwest private, if any, was due to NMF. I know each year was going to cost more than the one before. I went there two years, left to get married and finish at night school. I have a good job! But it probably didn’t make too much difference in my life. If there were full rides for NMF then, I didn’t have any idea.
