If YOU ran a college ... How Would You Attract Adult Students?

1: Schedule early morning/evening/weekend classes. And DON’T cancel the evening classes because of poor enrollment, forcing me to drop the course.

2: Audit forms and applications to see if an independent adult could fill them out with ease. Make sure all college forms include options for “Self” instead of “Parent/Guardian” only and when applicable, “Spouse.” I had to sign a release form to allow others to access/view my billing and financial aid info, and now my husband is getting bills addressed “To the payer of racheljps’s tution: Mr. racheljps” which he doesn’t think is as funny as I do. Allow blanks in the application or “N/A” options for sections that no longer apply (like sections requiring parental information).

3: Have an “office” for non-trad students (perhaps in conjunction with a transfer students office?) Offer support services specialized to their unique needs. One college I attended had a nice, out-of-the-way room with couches (possible for sleeping!) and lockers for commuters and also planned social activities so those students could meet each other.

I attended Hollins University as a “Horizon Student”, (adult student.) Anyone looking to find out how to make their adult students comfortable, happy, and keeping on would do well to look there. I would be very surprised if any school could surpass their efforts and successes.

Laser pointers and usb drives. Unlimited ramen noodles as long as one is enrolled.

edit: note last suggestion kind of serious.

Nice kudos for Hollins, frauette. Thanks for taking the time to post.
